i rang up today and got a quote on a few tyres and a few different tyre sizes. if anyone has info on if any of them look overpriced compared to what you paid or if any sound like a good deal. will be looking at getting some in the next couple of weeks.

1) Tyre - Micky Thompson Baja MTZ
Size - 285/75/16 = $385
- 265/75/16 = $380

2) Tyre - BF Goodrich KM2
Size - 285/75/16 = $350
- 265/75/16 = $350

3) Tyre - Maxxis Bighorns
Size - 285/75/16 = $310
- 265/75/16 = $289

4) Tyre - Summit Mudhog
Size - 285/75/16 = $275
- 265/75/16 = $245

also want to know about what gets most KM's out of these from people with real world experince... hope this also helps others when they ring for quotes so they have something to compare too!

Diezel45: was just looking at km2's at the tempe tyres website, the 285/75/16 are $300, the 265/75/16 are $275. Fair bit cheaper than your quotes.

No one seems keen to match tempe tyres prices, they just tell you some bad story about them. I have bought two sets from them and will buy the next from them very soon, seems to be a very efficient shop with heaps of turnover and hard working staff, although I'm convinced they recruit staff direct from Long Bay Jail.


I have 6 265/70/17 km2's that are nearly worn out after about 55000kms.

aww that is a fair bit cheaper, but having them worn out after 55000kms isnt that great. my mate has MTZ's and has done 60,000 and they look about %50. still heaps of tread!

I got a set of Yokohama Geolanders 265/65/17 for $330 a tyre. And you get the 4th tyre free until the end of July. So it cost fitted $1,000. Very happy with them and historically on the cruiser have got good mileage.

SUSPENSION LIFT: None

RIM SIZE: 16x6 +30 offset (Standard)

WEAR, PERFORMANCE ON and OFF ROAD: Only about 3000 kms on them so far. Spent a lot of time checking out the options as the OEM's are terrible. Main driver for what I got was the retention of the 29" diameter to keep high range gearing for towing a small van.
A remarkable improvement on ride, noise and grip all round. Slightly greater body roll as they have more shoulder on these standard rims.

They cost me $235 each from Bridgestones so may appear a bit hexy against the others but I'm happy with them so far. Only bought 4 as I kept the old spare OEM (same rolling diameter !)

This review is based on a work vehicle (Prado 150) driving 50% highway 50% Tanami Road every fortnight
Caveat: I have only driven this vehicle a few times but it drives well (but not in this condition!)

This front tyre is under 4 months and done no more than 7,000km



I like BFG tyres and have no gripe about them, but wanted to show that even good tyres can have a hard life
It appears that travelling highway speeds(100km/hr) on the Tanami road tears strips off any tyre.
The rear tyre cops the worst as the front flicks up sharp stone/roack the rear tyre travelling at speed with rotation hits the airborne stone and tears.
Tyre shop fitted $1600 of new rubber - 4 new BFG mud terrains... not convinced that will help
Will advise colleague to travel under 80km/hr in areas of loose gravel

I think you will tear the KM2's to shreds mate. And I love them but they are not designed to run on that surface. Have heard the Tanami is the hardest road on any tyre in OZ. We have the same problem here at work on site. The Hilux's are fitted with Cooper STT and we don't get long out of them either but that is what is supplied.

Yeah - happens every year when the grade the road. They use a sharp shale found in gravel pits along the Tanami to re-level and fix the road after the erosion from the wet. Takes a while for the sharp edges to get knocked off until it no longer cuts up rubber... about 12 months
I think reducing speed is the only way to reduce the impact on the rear tyres

For those that have gone from 245 75 16 to a 265 75 16, did it have a noticeable difference in power and economy.

I am tossing up between 265/70R16 and 275/70R16. I have roh trak 2 rims 7jjx16 o241 (7" wide) rims, no idea what offset they are, but with 255/70r16 on sr dual cab without flares the sit just inside the gaurds. I have 2" cal offroad lift and have ordered utemart flares. Do I need to change rim offset?

I recently bought from Ace Tyres & Auto (Brisbane) a set of "Continental Crosscontact A/T 265/65/R17", they have a special on atm for $100 off each tyre making them $200ea instead of $300. Fitment is $25 per wheel! Super quiet, great tread pattern, super sticky in the wet on the roads, great on the beach, haven't tested them in the Mud yet but I am sure they would go great, have a self draining pattern on them which definitely helps in wet conditions! http://www.tyreplusautocare.com.au/inde ... ct_id=2548

I'm not sure if it's just marketing but Bridgestone say their new D697 has been designed to overcome chipping experienced by USA designed tyres like Coopers and BFG's in Australian conditions.

Anyone have experience with Nitto Terra Grappler tyres? Ive never heard of them until today. The guy in the shop says they are the beez neez. Also was told the Dick Cepek Fun Country F-CII was good also. Actually every shop i go into they try to sell me a different tyre.

What i want is the Cooper AT3.

Nitto 265x75x16 for $309 per tyre fitted.
Fun Country 265x75x16 was about $350 fitted
Cooper AT3 265x75x16 was$354 fitted which is a bit steep in my opinion.

Anyone in Perth who knows where to get a good price on the coopers? PM me if thats cool.

hi guys, i didnt want to start a new thread so sorry if this doesn't belong here but i just wanted a couple of questions answered if possible, i've tried searching but havn't really found any answers.
I got a SR 2012 extra cab with no lift, would i need flares if i put on 245/70r16 tyres, also does anyone have feedback on the maxxis all terrain 980's? i like the 60%/40% tread and there apparently self cleaning, but i've also been looking at the toyo open country all terrain and yokohama all terrain geolandar GO12, i do a large amount of driving on road but also need something that can handle the mud and wet weather out hunting. Any feedback would be good thanks.

Would this be the biggest size you could fit on factory 17 inch rims with 2inch ome lift and arb bullbar and no mud flaps on the front? Can the wall profile be increased?

I haven't seen anyone else on this site with this size tyre. The increase in size (depending on what calculator you use) is 14mm over standard and therefore legal in Queensland. There are no issues with rubbing.

Too early to comment on wear and performance. First impressions are that they are a significant improvement over the stock Michelin tyres, which isn't at all surprising. The stock tyres had a number or deep cuts in the sidewalls which is the reason for my upgrade. I don't go off road too often, just a few trips a year to Moreton, Fraser and Stradbroke Islands so the new tyres should be up to the task.

Guys from experience would a wheel with 20-30 offset but with same size tire affect fuel consumption?

Shouldn't do. If it does, it would be from slightly more wind resistance due to the wheel sitting out more. But i doubt you would even notice it.

Thank you Kizzzaaa.Thats what I knew too but you never know ...the same thing would expect from a normal lift I guess right...as long as the load on the engine(see bigger tyre ftment)i stays the same

With that offset and the original suspension will the tyre get any rub? Untill atleast I get the lift?
