Just ordered a set of Toyo open country A/Ts today . They also had the Khumo's, General grabber A/t and the A/T2 and the Kelly TSR in stock as well, all were the same price fitted and balanced. The kelly was by far the most aggressive . Almost a muddy. They also said both General and Toyo are excellent to deal with warranty wise. Mickey thompson on the other hand are assholes, they had a customer with a ranger with less than 5000km on them and one failed and warranty was refused. Rep said the truck was too heavy Next set he's going Toyo.

Have to agree with GB.
Either the old BFG All-Terrain T/A's aren't suited to tropical climates or they send shite stock up to the top end.
We have a small fleet of Prados at work that have the old BFG AT T/A's on them - they only last 20-30,000km regularly running the Tanami and Duncan roads amoung others. Gone thru 2 sets each year - tyre dealer very happy

My partner bought her BFG's about 1 month before the new K02's were released. She got 245/70/17's.
I waited and got a set of 285/75/17 T/A K02's.

We both hit the Gibb River road in out own lux's - her tyres started to shred on the first day...




Rear tyres first to get cut up. Had to plug a couple sidewall tears up with sealant.
Approx 1500km on the Gibb + side tracks. Some slow bolder/rock crawling, sand + sharp shale/rock at 70/90km/h.
About 5000km - mostly on sealed road as these are used as daily runners


Compared to the T/A K02's:


Not a scratch
Admittedly these are larger tyres and have only done 2000km total - for track use
Partner looked at my tyres and turned a little green after the first day




For dailys I run these:



BFG Rugged Terrains - these have also done the Tanami - no sidewall tears, no tread chunks missing.
Approx 3500km on these
Waiting to try these in the wet but so far, very good. Great on the seal and surprisingly tough off road.
Will need to assess and report again in 20K

Agree 100% with GeeBung and DeadlyBeast....BFG AT's simply don't handle the rocky road conditions of the Pilbara, Kimberleys or even the Central Arnhem Rd....25 to 30k and mine were rooted !
Now to be objective, I may not have run the correct air pressures on the gravel, but my second set I have been meticulous in airing down particularly on the Laverton to Yulara Rd and the Tanami up to Hooker Creek....and yet these new treads are chipped and worn with less than 10k ! Be very hard to convince me to buy 'em again !

Currently running Toyo AT2 in 262/65/17 on my 2012 SR5. Done about 5k on them. Have found them to be a bit slipperier than the Toyota equiped Michelins but they were inflated to 40psi by the tyre service. Dropped the pressure back to 36psi and they are better. A little bit more noise from them but nothing a few dB on the radio doesn't fix.

I just replaced my original HT840's (I think they are called) on my 2009 sr5 at 102,000klm's, they had some more in them (I like to wear them right out, OK they were on the legal limit or under) but I got a puncture on the road, 90% road use and it was not worth fixing it, so I stepped up to the Dueler D697 same size, 255/70/15c A/T. Now to be fair the puncture was sustained on a gravel road with more than 40psi and towing a van. The road was way too short to air down and up again.
As they say you have to adjust your driving when going from a H/T to an A/T. It is hard to adjust, I like to hear a squeal sometimes. Before the Hilux I have owned a Porsche, a hot BMW, and a warmed WRX, and the sports bikes. Anyway I don't have much experience with pushing trucks through corners but these new tyres grip much better than my 6 yr old ones and they haven't squealed -- yet. So I was happy with the longevity of the originals but the new ones grip better despite being A/T. Now also I was shopping for LT A/T's -- light truck. Now although they are not listed under LT and I was told by everyone that I could not get LT in 255/70/15" , it actually says 'Light Truck' on the sidewall.
They cost $219 each after the $100 cashback at Bridgestone.

I got the new Kanati Trail Hog. very happy so far! heaps of grip on clay and rock and perform very well on the road in the wet. $870 for 4 fitted in 265.

Glad to see other blokes having same dramas as me with the BF AT. Mine have even started to go 'out of round' on the tread causing a hell of a sound on decelaration (you would think the diff is gonna go).

Really interested to see how you go with KO2's up here deadlybeast.

It is strange GB. Lots of rigs down South running on the AT's with no problems. Seems many who run them in the Top End suffer premature wear. Funny what 20 or 30+ degrees more ambient does to rubber compounds.

The pics from greysrigging are what our work vehicle tyres look like after 20-30 thou... even after being meticulous with air pressures - didnt make a difference. Accountant says - no more AT T/A's

I'm leaving tomorrow on a trip from Darwin to Sydney via the Territory Gulf, Lawn Hill, Birdsville, Innaminka and Tibooburra. No doubt mine will be 100% rooted after all that gravel.....oh well......keeping an eye on the couple of tyre threads to see what others are running.

I know this is an old thread, but I needed advise on new tyres. I am after the Yokohama Geolandars, in either the 265/65/r17 size of the 265/70/r17. What I want to know is which one would be better, the G012 or the G015.

Please advise and thanks in advance.

Thanks for your reply Hutch. I hope they are better too. But from what I have been reading, there are mixed views. So was wondering if I should just go for the G012...

I got a quote from Bob Jane for the G015s... 4 for the price of 3. Which is pretty good. They said that the G015 are the current AT tyres from Yokohama so that is what they recommend.

Any suggestions or advice welcome.

I used to run Yokohama Geolander AT-S 265/65/17 exclusively on my 2011 V6 auto SR5 4x4. Great AT tyre for the road, but they are not a light truck sidewall so if you are towing much or carry a load the rears wear out very fast. I used up 2.5 sets between 1000kM and 95,000kM. I have now changed to Toyo At2. Not quite as good in the wet, but still very competent tyres and handle towing far better. They are also LT sidewall. You do notice the sidewall stiffness a bit but if you have decent suspension like Ultimate not so bad at all. They Toyos are VERY noisy on the dyno too, heaps more than the Geolanders.

The 265/65/17's cost me $1000 fitted and balanced and wheel alignment at Kmart Tyre and Auto. With that you get free rotation and balancing at 6 month periods.

Thanks HK1837 for your reply. I don't tow anything and nor do i carry much weight so I shouldn't have much to worry about premature tyre wear. I was interested in the geolandars more for their grip in the wet. I had the Toyos on my car when I bought it. Not the greatest tyres in the wet...nor on the gravel roads. They were old though so can't really blame them, but still had bout 25% life left in them. Tyres are supposed to retain their characteristics throughout their life.

Anyways your (and others) comments, advise and experience helped make up my mind and i got myself a set of Yokohamas...G015s

Haven't driven much at all. First impressions are, they are less noisy than the Totos (Not that you can hear much tyre noise over the Diesel engine). Grip seems to be better, but that could be just coz they are new tyres and also coz of the wheel alignment. Steering feels lighter as well. It is supposed to rain these days so will see how they perform on the wet. Was tempted to take it offroad but with the little baby, it's a little difficult to make time for that at the moment.

The Yokosuka are great in the wet until they wear down to about 30% or less. They are not that great on dirt, only puncture I've had was with Yokos on dirt. You'll be happy with them, just won't get the kM you'll get out of Toyos. I run Yoko G055 on my Lexus RX350 and if my SR5 was a simple daily I'd have Yokos on it. With over 250kW and 600Nm on tap I think the Hilux will be wearing out whatever tyres I put on the back regardless!

Well at least they will be good for 70% of their life. And yes, they gave a warranty of 50000kms, which isn't that great. I was hoping for them to last at least 60000. Had Coopers on my old 4x4 that came with an 80000km watranty, and they did last that long. Next I would like to try would be the BFGs...maybe
Dirt roads is something that I would like to see the performance on...maybe the newer ones (G015) would be better.

Jist an update, I took my car on some dirt roads but I wasn't really impressed with the grip. The performance was pretty similar to the Toyos I had on before.
Planning on a little 4x4ing over the weekend...will see how they are.

I've got some LT265/70/17 Terra Nitto Grappler that came on the truck when I bought it. Never heard of them before so hopefully they don't fall apart.

Just bought an equivalent BFG AT spare as the spare under my tray was no where near the same size. Really surprised to see how easy they fail!?
