TRD Alloy Rim Damage

Postby steelecarins on Sun, 27 Mar 2011 4:29 +0000

Our TRD Hilux is about 30 mths old and has developed over the last couple of months strange worm like tracks in the clear coat on the polished alloy on all 4 rims. These tracks have no common path, start and finish at no set point of the rim, and are all over all 4 rims. You can not feel them by rubbing your finger over them, or dragging your fingernail over them, but they will not wash, scratch, or polish off. It seems to be under the clear coat.

I took the TRD back to the dealer we purchased it from on Friday, as I feel it is a warranty issue, as it doesn't seem to be caused by external damage. These rims came standard with the TRD. The person who handles warranty issues at the dealership wasn't there, but another employee was very helpful, and after taking all relevant information on the vehicle, and about 10 photos of each wheel, told us she would hand it to the relevant person on Monday.

Will keep you all informed, but I was wondering if anyone else with the TRD Alloy's had noticed anything odd with theirs?

Thanks all!

Its a pretty common thing with clear coated alloy wheels. I'd never purchase a set of wheels with this finish after it happened to some Advanti rims I had years ago.

All depends on the quality of the clear coat product used, evenness of the layers and skill of the person applying it.

The attention to detail that went into cleaning the surface before the clear coat was applied.

The clear coat on my polished alloy wheels is superb after 4 or so years of abuse...

Definitely sounds like a warranty issue... Lets hope Toyota comes to the party.

Good luck,
Matt

Dluxv6 I'm in the same boat as you . . . So I might follow your lead and just get the rims polished, Do you know what the cost might be ? . . .

Toyota replied to my request for warranty on the alloy rims today, only after I rang them back. After saying they thought someone had rung me back on my query, they informed me that as the vehicle was 2.5 years old, that it was not covered by warranty. Doesn't sound quite right to me, so am in the process of contacting toyota australia customer service to check on the fact of this. Would have thought that factory fitted rims that came on a new vehicle would be covered by the 3 year, 100,000 km warranty.....?????

Well, sent an email to Toyota Head Office, and within 1 working day have had a phone call from them, apologising for the way I was treated at my local dealers, informed me that my dealer had not even lodged a warranty claim on my behalf, which is not how they are meant to operate, and have organised for a new customer service rep to contact me at my convenience to take my warranty complaint, and follow it through. Doesn't mean that I'm getting new rims or getting them fixed, but at least they are now willing to communicate with me. Will keep you informed as things develop ....
