Well, I've got to get back to work. When I stop rowing, the slave ship just goes in circles.

Has anyone noticed the nasty rattle coming from the back seat on the new model Hilux?
It only occurs when rear seat is loaded.
Thanks

Not an owner of a '16 model but I believe this is quite common in the older model 'Lux. There's a thread or two on the forum. I had this issue when the rear seat was loaded (unloaded it was silent) and I tried a few things spanning from tapes to insulation materials. The best solution for me thus far has been cutting some 20mm heatshrink from Jaycar at a length of roughly 2" and then wrapped it around the hook that the seat latches to on the cab. This has stopped the noise for the last...say, six months?

I checked it last week and the heatshrink centre has pretty much disappeared signalling that I'll need to re-do my botchy repair job so this is very much a temporary solution (albeit a cheap one). I don't believe Toyota has a fix - they apparently just tape the crap outta the hook.
Check out Slain's Overlander, a perpetual work-in-progress.

Hi I had same problem but I had a piece of TV coax(used on UHF TV) just the outer black sheath bit split it & used it will last a bit longer than heat shrink but I think anything that is used will wear out the hook is a pretty snug fit over the latch. May be why Toyota got sick of the problem & made the 2016 rear seat fixed at the back. But may be we can find a way to unfix it so we can again store stuff behind the seat--there seems to be wasted space in behind--any thing is possible if you want it bad enough :( :(

I haven't noticed any noise from the back seat. I have had it empty I've had 2 adults on it I've had a 5yr old on it on one side and I've had a 5yr old and an adult on it and no noise at all.
If it has tits or wheels ....it'll cost ya money

Keen to hear peoples thoughts on this issue I found while while test driving an auto and manual on the weekend.

Basically the auto (13kms on the odo) was very refined, I wouldn't say quiet but just sounded pretty solid whereas the manual (15 model with 10000k) was really noisy and rattly like somene dumped a load of bolts in the cylinders, anyone found their motors have gotten like a rattle noise? Also the new software for the auto has made the car drive so much better then the first release auto I drove last year 8-)

My manual at 26000km is as smooth a silk...could be mistaken for not being a diesel. Seems to be getting better and better in every way.

Overall Quality Issues I've experienced - SR5 Diesel Auto, no mods.

The Thud/clunk tail shaft issue - New Tail shaft and SW upgrade - all good now
Fuel Sender Issues - being told I'm empty when I still have 17litres of fuel left - ongoing
Squeaky Brakes - yet to bring to dealer shitting me bad.
Tub Liner has come unattached where they put two sided tape. - Stupid! Will fix myself

It's gotten to the point I feel like a whinger going to the dealer. I have had Prado's for 12 years and only once ever went to the dealer for a non service issue (bad fuel). This is my first Hilux and I love it but Toyota has really let me down on quality and many others from what I am reading.

Rant Over.

You will realise the insignificance of those type of problems if you saw half the other manufacturers faults.

Done 6 thousand kay thus far and things that sh!t me on the SR hilux:

1. The headlight switch sh!ts me, there is no "off", only "Auto" and the "Auto" function is too sensitive. You drive under a freeway overp[ass during the daytime and the headlights switch on.....drivers infront of you think your O.D'ing at them for some reason....absolute crap. Gonna ask the dealer to switch it off fully and Ill control the light myself.

2. Dashboard is getting some slight creaking....its just a small annoying thing to me. I hate hearing creaks or rattles.

3. 6th gear ratio in the auto is an absolute load of crap and geared way too tall. Instead of making the 6 gear ratios closer together, with a very short 1st gear, and 6th coming in before 100kph and actually being able to hold it at 100kph, it cant hold 100 if its life depended on it...now I need to fix that issue too.

4. Cannot run media or GPS off your phone (Google Maps would be good) onto the big centre screen. what crap is that? Why put such a big screen on the SR's if there is no additional SatNav or media function?

5. Design of the rear leaves, not that Ive had to replace them yet, but the front bolt needs to be cut off to replace them, or you need to drop the whole fuel tank. Bolt goes from inside out, as opposed the other way around which would allow you to easily remove it.

Max, there is a thread here by boxhead about turning the auto lights down, something about turning the light sensor on the top of the dash to adjust up or down
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Read this thread http://www.newhilux.net/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=26752 and follow the process detailed there. Set the lights to -40 (1 flash) and you'll notice a marked improvement.

I'm not sure how you have your screen set up but in my case I have the home screen set up with 3 panels so on the left I have 2 1/4 panels showing the distance to empty and fuel consumption and 4 phone shortcuts and on the right I have the audio panel - to me that makes good use of the screen area.

Obviously it would be nice to have GPS on the screen as well but for that you need the SR5 model and I couldn't get a SCC in that grade.

What did you do for the fuel filler on the tray?

We went with Dekkers for the tray after being impressed with the one they made for the last Hilux. The fuel filler tucks up neatly above one of the under-tray boxes which is rebated for that purpose.

I picked up a set of four rims before xmas on fleabay. The bloke was in the tyre industry and told me he sells what customers dont take with them so keep an eye out there. I had to haggle pretty hard but got him down to $50 a rim with the centre caps. Good luck in your search you're going to need it!

I have 5 orig black rims as new in Cairns , can bring to BNE end of February
