They seem to come up with a bit more with every other vehicle in the range on updates jimO, cant see why they would change that, I think they usually roll out at a base point, watch the real world testing through warranty and failures then decide how much they are going to up the engine performance.

That's one of the reasons I always buy second gen, get the main issues out of the way and get updated tech on components and accessories. By the time they get to third gen in a series they are about ready to ditch the model, even though its the best of the series I usually steer clear as the value drops as soon as the next generation comes along.

Does anyone know if the new 2.8 has a belt or chain for the camshaft?

The choice of drive-train for the single CC is less than it was for the previous generation, if I want the larger diesel with the full power output in a SCC I have to now buy a 4WD version and suffer the extra cost over a 2WD.

I was very enthusiastic about the new model initially but given the cost of a 4WD I'm thinking I might have to hold off on the new model and stick with the 4.0 manual 2WD I have now for a while longer.

The new one has belt cam chain I believe. Hey got my new one Monday. Goes like hell. Only 1500rpm for 100Kmh in 6th. Tow in 5th about 2000rpm for heavy loads. Those old ones with bonnet scopes want to watch out. Bit skeptical at first but glad to make the move to new model.
Hey! this is supposed to be the new hilux forum!!!
Main concerns are the extras like bars, tanks, batteries, snokels etc.
See you when I pass you!!

Just be careful in the bush, might get an errant little stick scratch the side of it... :P

Spent my remanding super on this new one. Been waiting 3 years for new one. So far so good. Nothing better
on the market now. Just not leaps ahead of others as it should be. But thats why we buy hilux - cant go wrong.

New motors are chain driven, just get a 2.4 diesel it'l be fine.

Does it really matter if its chain or belt :? Belts can fail, so can chains. Just look at how many Navara's have crapped themselves when they have done a timing chain

I have owned a new Dual Cab Auto for two weeks and still have a 2012 model to compare in our fleet
the noise difference using a simple iPhone app
2012 75db the 2016 62db
There is a improvement however these diesels still have a long way to go comparing to the euro motors
No space on dash to mount phone cradles or radios etc if required, all surfaces are very curved or round.

When I brake and stop I get a slight knock in my back same when first accelerating ( maybe the rear leaf springs??)
Road handling is superior to previous model, cornering etc

The Auto gear box is disappointing and I hope it settles down, when cruising or rolling down a hill say at 80km
it will shuffle back to about 3rd gear 4000rpm to slow you down which is totally crazy!! why not to 5th or 4th
( I'm starting to wish I had the manual to take control) however in busy traffic in Sydney I will prefer the compromise
The ride is shocking when not on a smooth surface, like a wild wild BULL WOW, I'm sure this will settle with a load and some wear
however the ride is really in your face :(
No rear vents or 12v for rear passenger
The communication system and Navigation is easy to use however app system maybe just a toy for those that like wasting time trying to get this stuff to work etc needs some patience
For tall people the front drivers seat needs to be lowered all the way for additional leg space, the seat travel could be better.
And Guess what, Toyota has no no assesories available (last week anyway) bull bar, seat covers, roof racks etc
Towbar was in stock and has been fitted

is the spare tyre tight? Might be moving causing that knock

That was a problem with the YD25 single row chain setup, was a problem in both the D22 and more so D40, the ZD30 navara's seldom required new chains, belts are meant to give less vibration but chains are probably more durable and better for a 4wd.

Test drove a new extra cab on Thursday. 2.8ltr with the six speed manual box.
Was I surprised or what ?
The salesman said with a grin, try out the eco / power button.
Took off in eco mode and it seemed pretty good through the gear range, stopped at a set of traffic lights and thought... press the power button and see if I can feel any difference.
Bugger me it took off like a scalded cat.
this thing really hoots, its so responsive its not fair on the other makes .
It really throws you back in the seat. I had a grin from ear to ear by the time I got back from my 20 minute drive. Really impressed with all the features.
I can't wait to get mine in March

The new imt (manual) is awesome, cannot stall it. Matches revs on up and down shifts. I only test drove the auto, loved it. Told my mate about it, he thought it was a good idea to test drive it. Traded in his 2014 sr5 for a manual one. Now he is trying to convince me to upgrade. Would love to, but my wedding and honeymoon are coming up and that's where all our money is going.

After having the new SR5 for a week now it is disappointing how rough the ride is, when you hit a bit of a bump the whole car trembles or shudders. It doesn't seem smoother than previous models like the advertising states where they are having a shave while scooting along a dirt road. I was told to get the rear springs reset to soften them up a little, it works a treat.
The genuine tub liner wasn't going to be available until the end of Jan so I ended up getting a spray on Rhino liner, I'm glad I did because it isn't as slippery as the plastic and it cant get sand or water under the lining. Everything else with this Hilux is bloody awesome and I cant wait to drive it all the time.

In my experience it was much smoother than my 2010. Having said that, I went straight from mine to the demo and then back again. It wasn't like comparing chalk and cheese, but was definitely different.

That's the trouble with commercial vehicles when there's no load in them, hard ride. Maybe worse than the old model because of increased rating. I had an old Falcon ute years ago and bolted a slab of 1/2" plate to the floor in the back permanently to dampen the ride.
Regards Chris.
