First service is complementary at 1000km. Why not get your dealer to change the oil for you? That's what I did. From memory the oil was around $140. It's supposedly fully synthetic and very thin. I vaguely remember it being 0w15 or something like that.

From what i've read the oil viscosity is 0w-30, grade ACEA C2. I was told it's a low ash oil grade developed due to the dpf

I thought they left the oil in there til 10k but just made you come back to double check the engine is going alright... For some reason changing oil early in a brand new car is bad...?

Well yes if you are going to the snow, you don't need it in qld. 15w40 is fine unless you freeze.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

I would recommend whilst the vehicle is under warranty you use nothing but the oil Toyota provides to reduce the risk of non-compliance if the engine fails for some reason or other. Why people are recommending different brands etc is beyond me.

X 2.

I've been told the toyota oil is specified as low ash grade due to the DPF

Engine problems under warranty and the first thing Toyota will do is blame you for not using their oil.

Don't even begin to imagine Toyota will be reasonable when you claim warranty especially when it comes to motors. Go back and search the history on this site and you'll find numerous stories of members being knocked back for using "third party" oil.

Use at your own risk.

i heard today that dealers can get a sort of DNA analysis done on engine oil to see if it is the correct type or not. so if you run the wrong oil they can use that as an excuse to bounce the warranty.

Have used the cheapest 15/40 diesel oil I could buy in 20l drums. Castrol, Valvoline, Shell, Gulf Western. Range $75 - $90. Changed every 10,000Kms + filter. no issues so far, 290,000Kms. Just chase the specials. These are all good oils and meet all SAE standards for our engines. From past experience with other engines I would NEVER put full synthetic oil near my engine or ANY road engine I owned.

well that's interesting, although i have bugger all mechanical knowledge.. i was just talking to a friend who is a mechanic and he suggested i only use full synthetic oil. i had just picked up the car from toyota the day before from its 10000k service and i remembered that the service lady pointed out that they used synthetic oil.

apparently the reason behind it is the synthetic oil doesn't cause as much build up (of gunk) in relation to EGR

The Gunk build up could be true, I don't know. My dislike for synthetic oil is that it WILL find somewhere to leak and it is unnecessarily thin for most engines. This is fine for extremely close tolerance hi performance engines (F1 etc) IMHO it is just fashionable to use in road cars and an unnecessary expense. Some like to brag about how much their oil cost.

I checked my EGR recently and it was quite good compared to some pics. I have seen, so maybe this depends more on the type of miles you do (city or highway). I do mostly highway.

If Toyota specify fully synthetic 0W-30 for the 1GD-FTV, then that's what I would use, period. I would imagine this engine would be extremely costly to repair or replace, so why would anyone use a different oil especially during the warranty period? $120 for genuine oil and filter is not too bad really.

Yep, I'm with you Adam. $180 for all services during the warranty period is the go and ya just don't have to worry about any of it. Probably less hassle if there is a drama as well.

Hi
Just through I would throw you my recent experience with Toyota Oil.
Recently purchased the 2012 Hilux and asked the oil the was used in its previous servicing and was told genuine Toyota fully synthetic and just get it from my local dealer, I had a look and the Toyota website about their oil best blah blah blah so I rang the local dealer up to buy some oil and filters and they do not stock it!!! they do not use it and the young bloke said they just use some type of Valvoline!
This is a fairly large city dealership so have think about what your all really getting!! and maybe not getting in your services etc.
