Mid service interval oil change

Mid service interval oil change

Postby Random Dude on Mon, 19 Dec 2022 10:00 +0000

Hi,

I went to do a quick oil and filter change on the weekend. I had a quick look and, it looks like you need to drop the bash plate to get to the sump plug and also the filter is in a hard to reach spot,so i gave up before i started.

Is there an easy way to do a simple oil and filter change?

Take it to a service centre.
I guess it depends on how you define "easy" & "Simple"?
Mine is an older model, but I've noticed a few people complain about the various design iterations, maybe yours is one of those "suck it up" versions?

yeah it doesnt look easy - i will have another look when i have more time over the break.

this is on a 2017 Hilux and it looks like you need to drop the bash plate, sump plug is half fouled by a cross member and the filter is accessed from behind the drivers wheel and will need a proper filter spanner instead of a traditional filter strap.

This is a big step backwards from my previous car which was a 2014 Prado where you could have the whole job done in a few minutes.

Ahh modern technology... Don't you love it? maybe it's a conspiracy to make more money for the dealership
I understand that dealers don't make much money on the sale of a vehicle, it's more in the servicing.
Can't be too bad to remove the bashplate. The Toyota filter tool isn't too expensive and works well.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

If its a mid interval oil change dont bother to change the oil filter. Just drop the oil
Many change the oil every 5000km only changing the filter every 10,000km
Gotta drop the bash plate on most decent underbody setups.
Gen 7 lux has the sump plug over the cross member too - protects the thread from getting bashed in if going over rocks etc 4x4 using the factory tins / underbody stone guards
