Tub Removal - Photos of Tray Fitted

Hi Guys,

I've decided to remove the tub from my dual cab (with black widow drawers and canopy) to replace with a steel tray. Has anyone removed their tub? Just after some guidance. I see that there are only 6 bolts holding it on, but how do you disconnect the fuel cap release cable, filler neck etc. Would also like to know how heavy the tub is and how many blokes are needed to lift it off. Any tips would be much appreciated. Doing the job next Wednesday (8 June 2011).

And yes, I've used the search function without success.

Doesn't take to long. Remove the tail lights, two bolts I think for each tail light and then they just click out with some pressure. Like you said 6 bolts for the tub it's self. Filler I struggle to remember, I think twist the "thing"'that holds the release cable and then the cable should pop out. The actual filler I can't remember, wasn't hard. Fairly sure you need to remove the inner guard on that side. Two people can lift it but certainly easier with 4 people. Plus if you have a canopy and draws it will be a lot heavier! The more people there to help the more people you have to blame when it doesn't come off properly

The fuel cap release and the filler surround are just seated in there from memory and it just pushes out. The tubs are not heavy on there own but the canopy and drawers might add a bit of weight

Always planned on putting one I could lock on there but never got around to it, mine still had the original tub one on there.

There is no need to change the filler neck. The locking ones have a different end so you cannot use a factory locking fuel cap on the tub type but there is a cheap aftermarket one that is not as good but an option.
I have since fitted a factory tray back locking one because I got it at the right price

I just swapped my tub recently.
First remove both rear mudflaps, then the plastic guard under the left wheel arch to gain access to the filler neck.
Don't be lazy and just cut out a section with a stanley knife like the previous owner of my car.
The little plastic retainer studs can be removed by making a tool from a caulking gun nozzle, which you push over the pointy end to compress the barbs. Just cut the nozzle down til it's a tight fit.
As already mentioned, remove the rear lights and disconnect the loom close to the lights.
Removing the tailgate takes a lot of weight out, (only 2 hinge bolts and a wiring plug) but 4 blokes is still good as it's an awkward shape to lift.
The filler flap cable is held in by a plastic nut which locks like a light bulb bayonet fitting, twist it from underneath the wheel arch. You have to leave the filler cap off, so shove a piece of rag in there to keep dirt out.
The filler neck has a plastic grommet which can be twisted/pushed down towards the tank to release it from the rubber grommet which stays with the tub. Grab it from underneath to twist it. and pull at same time.
Don't forget to disconnect any towbar wiring.

it's 1800 long. I replaced the ARB rear step and tow with a Toyota tow bar. The ball just protrudes out beneath the tray (you can see it in one of the photos. It has two positions on the hitch.

That looks neat, I love the recessed trundle tray.
Who made it? & What did it set you back if you don't mind.

It was made by Websters Engineering in Swan Hill (Vic). I bought it second hand for $1600, sandblasted it back to metal and powder coated it. Came up like new. The guy I bought it off paid $4500 for it in 2006. It's also got a 50 lt water tank underneath. The trundle draw is one of the neatest I've seen.

Yeah it was on ebay. It was on a gold coloured lux. Bidding started at $1200 with a buy it now price of $1800.

yeah i would of scooped that up if i was on the 'mainland' but freight to TAS would of been that much again..
