Not sure but I would think you could find one at a junker for cheap.

Hi guys,

Just to confirm, on my 05 HIlux, i need to cut the cover around the recessed plastic and then install a seperate cover that will clip in on each side? This will then allow me to remove and replace the existing air filter?

My hilux has 140K km on it and the air con smells like mouldy socks when turned on, so i'm thinking this is the drama.

Cheers
Andrew

Andrew, it's more than likely a build up of bacteria in the air con components that's causing the smell.
Do a search for 'Air Con Bomb' on ebay or Google and use one of these t cure the smell

Basically it's an aerosol and you put the air con on recirculate, hit the plunger on the aerosol and leave it on the floor in the middle of the truck with the doors and windows closed until it runs out.
Open the doors, let the vapours out and that should cure it

Air con filter mod

Mate the cover is 30 of bucks from toyota.

Best your remove your air box behind the glove box and clean an hose your evaporator.

A non blocked air con air vent, air speed is 41 kph. At high speed

Measured at the center vent.
Any slower than that your evaporator core is blocked and requires a clean. Then fit your new cabin filter an cover.

Bam it will never happen again.

Also
A blocked evaporator core will cause a build up of bad suff causing the smell

But worse than that is causes thermal expansion of the evaporator core due to freezing behind the dust. This causes a stress crack and the a/c gas escapes.

So the sooner the better for the clean.

Hope this helps.

Thanks guys, will get onto it after parts arrive!

EDIT Got the cover for $23.50 and non-gen filter for $22.00 not including postage. Had a look at the drain pipe, nothing blocked there!
Very happy now.

Any chance you might know the part numbers for the cover please?

while I don't know the part number I grabbed one out of a Camry that was basically new when it was to be changed as part of a capped service out of a fleet car. same size but lot more surface area & I believe cheaper.

Hi all
i replaced my filter with a ryco available from supercheap for about $25, for the best smelling air freshener that lasts along time grab a satchel of fluffy clothes softener concentrate and drop it onto the top of the air con filter last forever and smells great, with the filter installed open or close the recirc flap which will allow you to drop satchel on top of the filter

There is a new machine on the market that workshops should be getting in by now that treat that dirty sock smell with ozone to kill the bacteria living in the evap core. side steps the real problem of the evaporator being partially blocked with a medium that the bacteria can live in.

The fabric softener works well for a month or so then starts to make a bit of a bad smell, just leaving it under the passenger seat works well, not sure id take the risk of it rubbing through sitting on top of the filter.

Hi, I can't seem to see the photos posted here on this thread. I have the same problem with my Camry, its a 2004 and Toyota decided to start installing cabin filter in 2006. It seems like I can also cut out mine, but would love to compare it with a 2005 Hilux without the cabin filter slot cut.
