Hi guys, I know this is an old thread but I thought Id just give what info I have, Ryco Filters make a Cabin Air Filter for the Hilux its part number is RCA178P www.rycofilters.com.au which does not seem to be the same as prado's. Sells for around ~$25AUD

Since my local doesn't carry them all the time, I get them from the states, but as an after market part.
Purolator makes an almost identical filter that has been working great for my 08 KUN26L, the part # is C35667.
Hope this helps, and it retails for less than $US20.00

Air Con Cabin filter Cleaning?

Postby berniecam on Sun, 25 Nov 2012 6:27 +0000

Air Con cabin filter cleaning ? I was doing a check of the air con cabin filter in a late model Corolla (almost idientical to SR5 Hilux) it had done 20,000 kays & was very dark grey to black in color (pure white when new) so I thought well might have to invest in a new one last time I got genuine Toyota it was about $60.00. I began to think the old early Hilux engine air cleaner filters were washable & now not anymore & might be a big risk of damageing them & getting dust straight into the engine anyway. However as these filters are air con & inside the cabin might give it a go at cleaning it & putting it back into service again you have to treat them very gently especially when you wet them & do not shake them too violently, I put about 75 mm of warm water into my laundry sink & a fairly generous amount of "Nappisan Plus" powder into the water lowered it into the sink & also put a slight weight on top to keep it under the water left it for about two hours, turned it over & left it for another two hours you should have seen the color of the water black as pitch I removed it gently they become very soft & can be easily damaged but will hold all their shape gave it a very thorough rinse out in clean water & put out in the sun to dry was completely dry after about five hours I would say about 75% of the black soot or carbon or whatever the black stain has been removed no damage to the filter element & no holes or tears in it either so it might do another 20,000 kays so may be give it a go. ;) ;) ;)

long as you're very careful it should be ok...

I'm buying my 06's cabin filters for about 10USD and i would change them twice for each service period (at about 7500k). At that price i would not think of washing them. The engine can burn through some germs but wet paper would usually be a good home for them so... don't wash it.

The white filter element is paper and the dark ones are charcoal/active... something to stop the germs. If you're getting the 2nd i would go for the Toyota ones else the paper is about the same quality in Ebay as is in Toyota dealership so just do the smart thing and don't spend 6 times the money but do get a new one as the human airways are not that easily serviceable ;)

They are up in behind your glovebox. Just remove that and in the right hand side of the opening you should see a plastic cover roughly 25mm x 200mm? (massive guess ;) ) It'll have plastic clips on it, so its not to hard to find. just open that up and remove the filter...

just to clear something up not sure what you mean about carbon active but this filter is nothing special just a block betrween outside air & air con intake fan it will take out most larger size dust particles (but not all) & some soot ,weed seeds gum tree leaves, pine needles etc. Cleaning it with what I suggested no bacteria will survive in & it must be completely dry when reinstalled not to be put back wet or damp. CHEERS ;)

Just remember that the 05 and early 06's didn't have a filter, if you get stuck wondering where it is, but im pretty sure theres a thread on here with info on how to add it in there if you want one.
The funniest part about you reading my signature is that by the time you read the whole thing from start to finish you only then realise there is nothing interesting in it.
