Buffeting - wind noise

I had my car in for a service this week

I had just been for a drive from sydney to canberra and it drove me up the wall to the point I recorded it on my iphone

So as I had a service booked I told the dealer Pennant hills Toyota if they wanted to listen to it but they said they had to experience it and that I would have to show them the noise before they would do anything about it. so i now have to wait for the wind to move in the right direction then get down to them an get one of their mechanics in the car with me and hope it happens again....

apparently all us Hilux owners are liars even if we have proof recorded
I have a copy of the recording but i can't work out how to post it

Hi all, could it be the radio aerial buzzing in the slip stream of the vehicle especially on strong windy days.I noticed this sound not long after I bought it and just put it down to that

Hi Greg,
I have just purchased SR5 as you have and fitted ARB Deluxe Winch bar and have that exact noise you speak of. Ifirst thought the noise was coming from the Sump guard setting up a resonate vibration but after removing it and doing a test run the noise is still there, My next thought is to contact ARB design section to see if they have a solution, keep in touch,
Regards Doug

I now get a very annoying whistle from the front end that kicks in about 80klms and out again at 105k an hr. Its driving me crazy and so far have tried blocking all sorts of holes in the bar without success. The noise is a howling sound like you get moving and open plastic bottle into the wind but sounds metal in its effect.

If anyone has had this I would love to know the solution.

Over easter I experienced this aswell, first thought it was the rumble strips on the side of the road. except the noise was still there when no lines on the road. Even stopped and looked around the car and under it with nothing out of the ordinary. Started off again and it started making the noise again. Slowed down to about 90k's and it stopped, speed up to 100k's and back again. After listening to it for a while it seemed to be coming from the drivers side mirror. There was a fairly strong wind coming from right to left across the road. It certainly steems to have something to do with the design of the mirrors and outside wind directions.

Doug I found the problem !! On the 2010 SR5 Toyota have fitted 2 small metal brackets just in front of the steering arm boot on each side beneath the vehicle. They are on the chassis and have 2 12mm bolts each. remove them and the noise is gone. They are not on earlier models. I have informed ARB in Adelaide and provided them with Pics.

I concluded the better approach angle of the ARB bar allowed more wind to hit the bracket, apparently, this time I was correct.

cheers

i had the exact same problem after fitting an ARB bullbar to my 2010 SR5, i taped up everything on the front of the car to find this noise, i used 150metres of tape and the last 3inches i just slapped over the 2 top holes on the LHS lower wishbone, when i drove off the noise came in at 80kph and gone again at 105kph BUT! it was only half as bad. so then i ripped off all the other tape and just taped up the holes on both side lower wishbones and PRESTO the noise gone. No one could help me before hand and Toyota and ARB didnt give a "flying duck" about my problem BUT! I FINALLY FOUND IT MYSELF.

I had this annoying problem on my '04 last year... Cause turned out to be a clear cellophane type of "cover" on the chrome trim around the outside (passengers) of my windshield. One night while driving in the rain and pumping some Jimmi Hendrix (i swore it was his guitar), we heard the noise and it drove us insane!

Quick fix was to tear the darn thing off of the side that had lifted... On the way back the same thing happened from the drivers side, so I just pulled it off all around.

Check that chrome molding (if the post 2005 has it) and let me know if that was the culprit for anyone else.

I have a similar problem with the blowing a bottle type noise in my 07 Workmate dual cab. I have found out that it only happens when I have it on vent and disappears when on recirculate and only over 100 km/h. Did you find a solution?

I've got a humming when I get over 100 ks. I think it's the bonnet protector vibrating, anyone had this and fixed it? 2012 model.

Just bought a 2013 hilux and had ARB bar fitted and experienced the wing noise. Yes, the removal of brackets in front of steering arm works but better still, the taping of the two holes in each wishbone does the trick. The brackets must cause turbulance that then creates air flow over the wishbone. Anyway, problem fixed in 2 minutes

I had this problem after fitting a ARB bar, two weeks it drove me made, ARB told me it covered under warranty. I don't know what would actually be covered?

It's the wishbone guards (not sure what they're meant to stop)

Remove both of them and put the bolts back in.

Just noticed this thread. I've had the same noise but it completely goes simply by setting the internal air to recirculate as opposed to outside air option. Interested to know if others here notice the same thing. With outside air option turned on I get the wind howl on drivers side at higher speeds.

It sounds like your having cabin over pressure and popping your door seals open.. :?:

I taped the holes on wishbone (top and bottom) and removed the wishbone guards (and put the bolts back in)... The noise stopped.. Thank god...

Just a thought, but the new hilux has 3 small fins under the mirror and if seen a few hiace with the same fins. Many Toyota do know about it.

Hey guys any chance of some pics with your solutions. I just fitted a O/L Hoop bar for my Hilux and the whistling noise over 80km/h is driving me mad haha. Very impressed with the bar though.

Two possibilities here, the small metal brackets as mentioned several times here, and also the plastic covering the bottom of the windscreen. its a known problem, basically remove it, and double side tape the bugger back down.
