** Steve9R's Contaminated Diesel Fuel Warning Mod **

IMO both plugs should be on the first filter. As the first filter is going to get any water and dirt first then that's where to monitor it.
As it is now the first filter can clog up with dirt and you wouldn't know until symptoms of being starved for fuel arose.

That makes a lot of sense. So I take it the plug on top is a sediment sensor? I'll shift that one over tomorrow and see if anything lights up...

Thanks for the replies!

Just done this mod today, too easy, could'nt be happier :D
Thanks for the info Steve, very much appreciated !!!

On a side note - ive been looking at a delphi pre-filter but wanted the water alarm on the pre-filter. Then i saw the dual OEM filters on tomed101 hilux on the previous page & it got me thinking. So i rang toyota & i can get a new OEM filter cannister with filter & mounting bracket (the whole kit) for $180.00. That way i can put the 2 sensors on the 1st filter for a little more piece of mind. I reckon thats not too bad a deal so i think i might go that way.

Cheers

$180 seems pretty reasonable..

So is it confirmed that new models have a similar system builtin?

Sounds great, just wondering if this would work on an 05 SR?
I'm 100% sure....I think

Apparently so.. check it yourself though to make sure.. just short the two wire cable at the bottom of the filter and see if you hear a buzzer go off..

Thanks Steve!
On the 'to do' list, the ever expanding list.
Just curious, will the buzzer sound when you turn the key to ON, eg- during the period that the instrument cluster does its light check?

At the moment my ute's fuel system is standard. I was looking at getting a water watch unit from responsive engineering. Would that be adequate ? Or would it be a good idea to also install a pre OEM filter as well?

Nope.. only if there is water detected..

Great Mod did it on my 2008 Hilux one weird thing, when I plug in anything in the ciggerette lighter plug (where I'm tapping off my 12V for the buzzer) it buzzez as I plug it in for a sec then is fine, it's not a loose connection we think it causes a spike as it's plugged in making the buzzer buzz for a sec, anyone elese find this who have actually done the mod?

have you checked that you have soldered to the correct wire in the instrument cluster ? the power is ALWAYS connected to the piezo, its only the earth thats switched..

plugging something into the cigarette lighter wouldnt make it go off unless its wired up incorrectly..

OK I was using a buzzer with a metal back meant to be mounted on a circuit board and two metal prongs. It was shorting to the back of the case due to the blobs of soldier on the prongs (holding the wires on), so I advise everyone doing this mod to use this type of buzzer (type with wires hanging out) so it can't happen to you.... now it's nice, works a TREAT

Glad you sorted it out..

thanks steve9r. I had this mod & headlight off mod on my list to do.
I have a 09/09 sr5 I bridged the connections as a test and mine has a factory fitted buzzer. sounds exactly same as headlight on buzzer.
still going to do headlight off buzzer mod with the relay.dunno why they don't do that from factory!
