05 Hilux mild boost tweak limit

Postby 7mmsaum on Wed, 17 Mar 2010 5:03 +0000

Hi Guys,
I have an 04 and an 05 Hilux and am keen on a little more power for the 05 Hilux (the 04 has lots more power down lower in the rev range). Can I adjust and shorten the std wastegate rod to give more boost? -and when I do, what is the limit before the onboard engine control spots the boost and shows an error code on the intrument cluster?

The wastegate on the 05 is controlled by a stepper motor hooked into the ecu along with the pressure sensor. You really can't change the boost without going into the electronics.
I have nothing good to say down here so I wont say anything at all

I have given some thought to bringing in a Boost cut module which would allow the boost to go out to 20 PSI. Factory boost is limited to 14.5 psi. Requires cutting a wire to the ECU though. Would be $300 ish

This sounds very interesting. We were just talking about it last week when trailing a new exhaust system for the turbo diesel. Everything runs perfect with a considerable increase in power until it hits the 14.5psi mark and cuts out the turbo. Very frustrating. We were talking with the engine management guys and they said we would be playing with fire trying to alter the ECU so it's interesting to find a mod for it. Do you have any more information you can link to on this?

I spoke to a tech rep for DP-chip about turbo boost and he said that given the speed that the turbos spin at in the hilux he wouldn't do it.
but Chip-it dose with there new power chip.
id be very carefull as to how i would do it and not with out fitting a boost gauge at least.
thats my 2c worth.

i run an xede piggy back ecu, boost is increased through this 2psi, i would not increse boost pressure much more, overstressing the turbo can lead to premature failure which will be expensive to repair, i dont know the limit of the factory turbo, ie how much you can safely push through it, and i dont know if anyone has experimented so its realy a case of suck it and see

yeah I definitely wouldn't do it on a normal Hilux. We're just interested in seeing what is available for some clients overseas who race their hiluxes. They want to get the most of the engine but are limited by modification limits. Adjusting the ECU and turbo could work well for them.

Hey thanks guys for all the info and time put into your answers. I will leave it alone then and just look after it well.

I do a lot of hunting in New Zealands back country so reliability is more important to me than peak power output.

I have had a tunekit boost control module on my lux for about 5 months. It has an adjustment in it to adjust boost level. I have mine set at 25psi max boost full load. This combined with my steinbauer and humex exhaust and my exhaust temp peaks at 550 degrees celsious under full trottle, full load driving conditions. Well within the hilux egt safety range.
It's all about getting the fueling parameters set correctly for the amount of boost going in.
Without an aftermarket exhaust and diesel module(be it whatever brand) I would not raise the boost level anymore than an extra 2psi.

Interesting you say 25 pound. We did about 10 runs on the dyno with my 2010 Hilux & boost over (if I remember correctly) 21psi didn’t increase horse power even with more fuel. 22psi was max power so it was set on 21psi. 23psi was less HP than 22psi. Possibly could have tried more fuel but figured 700NM at the wheels was plenty lol:

Agree with you on the fuelling parameters. Toon lean would definitely be a worry.

stevehastings, Would be possible provided there is somewhere you can pick up a vacuum signal when the throttle is released. I experimented with a Micro switch on the pedal connected, to an air solenoid plumbed into the vac pump, via a relay on my Bundy but had a terminal failure before I ever got it finished. Very confident it would have worked.

Wasn't aware you could put (or needed lol) a blow off valve on a diesel.
No throttle plate - no pressure - no vent

Am I wrong?
