Its easy to steel a spare tyre just get any hilux jack, wait for a good opportunity and start lowering. I found this out after one of the guys from work had his bog standard work mate spare tyres stolen. This has been making me think of a way to keep mine safe and sound.

The only thing iv come up with so far is putting a bike lock around it and secure it to the chassis.

Has anyone thought of anything better?

there is actually a tab that pokes thru one of the stud holes i believe, you will be able to put a padlock thru it. Just a PITA when you need to get it off

another way is what i have done
find chain which goes up when winding wheel down and the put padlock (small Lockwood type) thru chain and stud hole hole of wheel this effectively will not let the wheel descend until lock is taken off
cheap and effective

Yeah i run a solid cable bike lock through the chain on mine and up and over and through the spokes of the wheel.. its a combination lock, but a good one, so not a simple one to crack, and honestly people arent going to wind it down realise its jammed cause of a locking device, wind it up and then inspect it to see if they can undo it....

There's been a few stories on here over the years of people returning to their vehicles to find the chain dangling from underneath and no spare..

Yeh i use a heavey duty coated bike lock... its a combination lock whick i tape up to stop water etc....
due to the size of the new wheel and tyre i wrap it arround tight so it will save the tyre if the flimsy stock chain ever broke..

I was always concerned about losing the spare.... either by theft, or by that flimsy chain breaking sending a hefty great wheel/tyre into what ever was following....

I wrapped the chain around twice and used a padlock to hold the four links together..... I'd expect that if one link broke - the other would keep it safe.....

I'm not totally convinced that the anchor is sound enough - I may look at fitting something a little more substantial later.....

And - I do understand that these vehicles are designed primarily for industry.... but for goodness sake, they are designated as AUV...... what the heck is a person supposed to do if you get stuck up to the "gunnels" and need the assistance of the spare to get you out.........? wake up please mr Tojo.......

Tinsy little 76 litre tank and a spare .... got to be a better place for the spare - replaced by a decent tank....
