Power Windows constant power

Postby septhilux on Thu, 14 Jan 2010 1:29 +0000

Firstly thanks to everybody for taking the time to post ideas and fix its for the hilux, it's helped me out immensely in building my Hilux. My turn to see if i can help.
I hate having to turn the key on everytime i foget to put up my wndows, so together with an auto electrician and myself we found a simple fix.
On the left side fuse box, (behind the glove box), on mine, there is a grey relay in the middle of the fuse box, this is the power windows relay. Simply remove this relay, to ensure this is the right relay, once removed, turn the key on, the windows shouldn't work. In it's place, make up a short wire around 100mm long using 6mm - 8mm wire. Attach wide male spade electrical ends to the wire, ensuring they are soldered and taped (heat shrunk). Then using the wire bridge the 2 "wide" pins where the relay came out of in the fuse box, on a relay the Pin numbers you are bridging are Pin number 30 and Pin number 87.
I hope this helps.

An awesome mod for sure, but . . . does doing this mean the window system is no longer fused ? A fuse in the bridging wire would solve that. ? ?

This photo shows the relay out and the bridge in place.

This photo shows the bridge wire ready to go and the relay that was removed.

I should take another photo of the smile on my face but will save you all from that horror.

Great mod.

No mate, there should still be a fuse in somewhere becasue the relay was a likkley failure point. There is no fuse in the relay that came out. It is a really good idea I think.

Cam, is that relay under the glove box?

Yes Rod,
Behind the glove box, on the left hand side against the door pilar/fire wall. This is for a right hand drive vehicle.

Ps, as Rod said, this is a relay not a fuse. If you wre worried for some unimaginable reason you could always use a fuss-able link instead of a bridge wire.

Also I used a eyelet type plug instead of a spade plug as they are wider and fit better imo. I could not fild a flat spade connector thick enough to stay in.

i will make a few connectors up if you like and bring them to coffs. Will be able to fit this modification to around 60 vehicle an hour it is so simple.

Mines all done..... took about 2 mins including making the cable.
The relay legs are very thick, so I used a yellow ring crimp as well. I'll have to keep a close eye on it to see if it comes loose.
It may pay to tape the wire down once fitted to stop it coming out accidently.

Don't want to have 12v sparks coming out from the footwell whilst driving along.
Now I've said that, I might actually go and do it myself
