Anyone done this mod?
a certain franchised accessory dealer and workshop here have done it to their 06 TD lux, with taipan exhaust & piggy back unit.

I did it to my surf back when the pure blood japanese enigma was alive, by making up a plate and throwing it in. But lets not open that black box.... please.

I know this isnt what our save the whale freinds want to hear, neither do the EPA, RTA etc, but has anyone done it and found a difference in performance?

Not sure mate... I know the Triton guys do this mod... I'd be keen to know more but I cant offer any real input at present...

I havent heard of anyone doin this on a current hilux...might be worth asking monster if he's experimented with this on his hilux.

This might sound like a silly question, but where is the EGR valve located?

Interesting question, some people thing blocking it off increases power.

The people with 3lt Patrols and standard ECU do it because they have problems with the EGR valve failing and loosing power, they will tell you it goes better with it blanked off but in real life they put out less power and use more fuel.

It is harder to get good power increases out of the new technology engines these days with out doing expensive mods.

If they use a programmable ECU ( not a chip) they may be able to get more power by blocking of the EGR valve but with a standard ECU I doubt it.

You don't say if yours is a petrol or diesel.

in a turbo diesel i think blocking the egr is more to do with not putting carbon through the intake and the motor rather than chasing more power , after a lot of km's there will be a big builup of carbon sludge in the intake

Correct me if Im wrong Dylan but thats an issue the Tritons suffer more than most... Even the guy at the dyno place told me about it on the newer Tritons and to a lessor extent the Navara and Hilux..

Getting them cleaned every 50.000 (Or less) should be a general maintenance task he reckons..

yeah i know the tritons suffer from it but i think any diesel that recirculates the exhaust gas through the intake manifold will get crap in there

Yep.. Id agree... diferent makes at diferent intervals bu basically they all need to be done...

Whats the benift on the Triton... Less power loss over time or an icrease when the mod is done...

i think its less power loss over time , and the fact that your not passing the carbon through the turbo

dont want the turbo wheel blades guming up and getting out of balance , im no expert though , there is a heap of threads on the triton site

spoke with arb opps i didnt mean to type that. The dude claimed it was to ease up on the carbon deposits, in my old surf (im embarassed to even admit that) , you would unbolt the flange, pull off the manifold, clean it out, put it back on, bolt up the steel plate over the egr and away you go, less smoke etc.

Dylan I think you'll find it ( the egr gases ) don't go through the turbo mate only from the exhaust over the motor
through the control valve thingy and into the intake.
Still crappy for the motor in the long term imho .

We'd heard from a couple of "reputable" diesel workshops that blocking off the EGR valve on our 1HDFT motors would result in a power increase and was one of the first mods they did.
Load of bullshit. The g-tech doesn't lie.

I asked a mechanic mate of mine what the go is with EGR. He said its like eating your own shit and still expected to perform. Cant be any good for the engine in the long run. Just keepin the greenies happy
