Thanks for the good tip Crossport. I know what it's like to keep a close eye on rear brakes. If you don't keep the mud out of rear discs you can chew up a set of pads (and rotors) in 5,000kms. These rear drums might prove to be more reliable.

Ive heard Hilux has rear drums because the Korean government subsidises commercial vehicles with rear drums.

Its a shame there is not an easy rear disc hilux conversion

Yeah I heard that too for Thailand... but you also get drum brakes on Tacomas which are made in Mexico and the US.

It just might be cheaper for Toyota to produce drum brakes.

Pretty sure pedders do a read disc kit now.

Just upgrade the front brakes, they do maybe 80% of the braking anyway. Rear discs are a waste on a ute and the drums have better holding power as a handbrake,

Any recommendations on pads and rotors for my 2013 hilux? I called Burson Auto parts today and they said there are two rotor sizes and 3 pad options, so I'd need to take my rotors and pads in which is difficult.

Any specific pad and rotor combination I should be looking at? Cheers

What size wheels are on it? 4x4?

The 3 4x4 rotors are:

297mm x 25mm
319mm x 28mm
338mm x 28mm

Won’t be the 338mm unless it has been modified, these are the 2008-2009 TRD rotors.
If it has 17” rims it will be the 319mm rotors. Not sure which ones in 2013 (if any) had the 297mm rotors.

The 338mm rotors are a good upgrade, but you’ll have to buy new calipers off a 120 series ‘cruiser or 2008-9 TRD Hilux plus backing plates. Calipers are cheap new but you’ll need to buy backing plates used.

I use Bendix SUV/4x4 pads but others may have other suggestions.

Example calipers for 338mm rotors, just check they are right ones first:

Thanks mate, it's a 4x4 and the rotors are 297mm. I took your suggestion and went with the Bendix 4wd/SUV pads. I just got the basic dba rotors as they didn't have any of the slotted rotors in stock. Cost me around $250 all up from Burson auto parts.

How'd you go with the upgrade Hamish?

I can confirm that 150 Prado brakes fit on Non-VSC Hilux. And work really well!!!

Blackdelux did it before me, so he gave me some advice.

Basically you need the backing plate, bolts, hard brake pipe from caliber to line etc from the Prado also.

From memory it is virtually identical to a 120 series ‘cruiser front brake conversion, just the rotors are a few mm thicker on the 150 series. Same wheels should work.

The fix for the handbrake issue on Landcruisers and Prados is to fit extended Dog Bones in the rear brakes. Can the same solution be applied to the KUN26R Hilux rear brakes?

Given the stock dog bones are adjustable and can adjust beyond the length of the aftermarket parts, I'm not sure how they are any advantage.

The lower pivot is a bolt or something like that if i remember correctly. maybe you could do something there like increase the diameter...?
