Is there any bolt on rear disc brake conversions out there that wont cost an arm or a leg ,Dont Prados have disc rear end.Ive got an 06 v6 auto dualcab

Flush the brake fluid, refurb or replace the master cylinder, replace the flexi hoses if they're looking tired, skim the drums assuming there's enough metal left or replace, replace the shoes with decent brand. Skim the front discs or replace, refurb the calipers & decent pads. Bobs yer uncle.

I have been investigating the whole brake thing lately, whoever said you cant get the rears to lock up isnt trying hard enough

I played with the rear bias and easily got the rears to lock up, played a little more and got them about as close to not locking up as possible. Made absolutely no difference to the overall braking as I still couldnt get the fronts to lock up from 60kmh. Yes my clickers are adjusted on the drums, I run my hand brake at two clicks, always have always will, legacy from rally days

I carry about +400kgs on the back all the time, had a close call a month or so ago with an asian driving expert in the CBD so decided to really do something about it. I went down the path of the Prado brakes, weighed up the costs vs reported outcomes etc. Was all go for doing it and adding the braided lines etc but I spent a week running around to different wreckers and making calls, no one had any second hand sets and I wasnt forking out $300ish for a new set of calipers. (BTW I borrowed a set of mates old 150 series rotors and test fitted on the car, I could get those bad boys to fit for sure with some caliper extenders but thats getting OT)

Anyway I deal with one of the local B&R Brake guys in Western Sydney and they told me to go see one of thier other branch managers and have a chat. So I ended up following the advice of the guys there, I am now running ADB slotted and dimpled rotors (not my first choice, I would have rather gone with DBA Series 4) and also have some custom modified WRX pads. I was supposed to get braided lines as well but they didnt come in to be fitted on the day, waiting for them to be in later in the week.

Well I have to say even without the braided lines this set up has made a huge difference to the stopping power, dont need a lot of pedal pressure and it pulls up easily. had the usual mid week near miss in the city today and there was no need to panic, she pulled up with ease. As this is the first I had heard of using WRX pads, and so glad I went this way first, just wondering if anybody else has this set up? I know that the WRX pads will eat up the rotors a bit faster, just wondering if anybody else has this set up if they can tell me how fast? The B&R boys reckon two years but I do more Kms than most people. Even so the stopping power is well worth it for me.

Can you please post part numbers for the rotors and disc pads you have changed over to. Despite having a new Hilux, with GVM upgrade and towing I'm thinking about upgrading brakes and bugger the warranty.

x 2 and what B&R did you go to

Firstly I made an error, they are RDA rotors not ADB ( had a brain fade there somewhere ) the part number as quoted from the invoice is RDA7786D.

As for the pads I dont have any details, these are a custom fit by B&R, the invoice says Bendix Ultimate so not sure if they really are Bendix WRX pads or thats just a code they used for billing.

Best go and talk to Michael (no its not me, just a coincidence ) at B&R Blacktown, really nice guy, you never know, if you mention you heard of his setup from me he might give a discount

Anyway just to update, got the braided lines fitted today while I was there, pedal feel and stopping is awesome, almost no spongy feel in the first bit of travel now, brakes kick in hard and fast. I am so happy I didnt go down the Prado route now

Total cost was just shy of $800 includes a full bleed and new rear slaves as mine had just started leaking, the cost of the slaves was offset by the rear brake mod he said he was going to do but then said mine was allready done, I suspect it was merely moving the bias adjuster to max but I had allready played the max adjustment out on that.

Its not cheap but still cheaper than the Prado mod if you do it properly with the slotted rotors and rebuilding the calipers if you get used ones.

Im really happy, feel free to come and test drive mine if you are local and not sure if its worth it.

Booked mine in for tomorrow - really good guys to talk to - $ 720.00 - buggers are even going to give me a lift to work, when do you ever get that service anymore.

Hope you are as happy with the result as I am. Its a way better feel than the Bendix 4x4 I had in there previously. I tried really smacking the pedal today, everything locked up so thats a 100% improvement to before they were in

Michael is really good to talk to aye actually I think we had some man bonding going on, talked with him for ages when I went back to get the lines done yesterday, ask him about his acco on the KTM

fwiw, I ordered some DBA rotors and QFM pads from Brakes Direct. already had the braided lines

hopefully I'll get them on shortly, and my braking will go from good to great

Ok I have been looking into what possible pads they are using. Not that I want to take business away from the Blacktown B&R boys because they have been fantastic. But its a bit hard to use them if you are interstate. Mind you, I reckon if you called Michael he would prep and ship to you no worries.

Without pulling mine back out to confirm I reckon they are using these pads Bendix with the bottom tang cut off and possibly even taking a small slice off the bottom of the pad to make it shorter to match the hilux one that looks like this

I am not sure if this means the wear indicator is no more and I will need to keep a close eye on it or maybe they modified a squealer on from the old pads. Regardless you can easily see there is a significant increase in pad area, maybe 10 to 15% more if they scallop the bottom of the pad to have a 100% contact patch with the disc. Add the improved compound and it makes a world of difference.

I was also informed that there will be more brake dust as the compound is very different, no big issue I reckon, I'll ask today if he will put the kits together and ship them for interstate guy that may be interested.
