Hilux Brakes

Postby Rayne on Wed, 01 Oct 2014 7:34 +0000

Changed rotors (DBA T3), pads (QFM 4x4) and lines (Marks Adapters) on the weekend. Had more trouble getting the stripped nut/stud out than anything...

I was surprised how much life the original pads had left in them.

I'm getting a clunking noise from the rear when braking to a stop now, not sure exactly where it is coming from, any ideas?

Possibly... I was just reading on another forum the drum shoes might need to be adjusted, can this be done through the adjustment slot or does it need to be opened up?

Both and you will need to reset your hand brake

Have a read here, this was the first one I found in the search

I'll be in touch with B&R at some point cos it seems this upgrade is getting the big thumbs up. I think all I need is the custom pads, can source the rest of the parts from here no probs. May wait until the first pad change / rotor skim which will be sometime middle of next year on the big trip round Aus so who knows where we'll be. That said if I don't like how the brakes are performing in Jan / Feb in Tasmania I'll just chuck the OEM stuff and do it earlier. If I take the custom pads with me, I'll be able to source the rotors from pretty much anywhere as long as I call ahead.

My issue is weight - 3.1t Hilux towing 1.25t camper with mech override brakes (just replaced all the trailer brake components).

I towed the camper up and down the blue mountains last weekend when heading out to Oberon, unbraked trailer and was a little on the heavy side with just under a tonne fully loaded, pretty sure the kitchen sink was the heaviest item! No brake fade and still pulled up comfortably.

Caught a couple of semis on the descent towards Lithgow and had to hit them hard and they worked well, previously I would have been stressed about pulling up with hot brakes coming upon them around a blind corner like that.

So I spoke to B&R, helpful guys. Cos mine's a 2013 MY12 they need to look at the OEM specs to determine what pads will fit. We'll work it out. Not sure if the later model specs are different to the earlier models, but we'll work it out.

Using Bosch pads in the front on an 08 and adjusting the rears properly really does make a big difference as well. Its not as good as maybe Prado brakes but it definitely is better.

Stock horn is pretty ghey! I dropped down to P&PL and grabbed an off tone horn with the same plug connector as stock so now I run dual tone horns, certainly wakes them up a lot faster these days.

There is allready a second horn cable in the loom (2007 SR) tied to the radiator support in the front and a second mount point so its piss easy to do. I think I grabbed mine of a Bitsamitsi Magna late model, they look pretty much the same as the Hilux but are a slightly larger diameter. $10 and 10 mins to fit cheap as chips.

Hi all,
I have been towing a 2t boat (yes that's what the weighbridge said)which I built last year around & had enough of two feet standing on the pedal to stop the show. car is an 06 sr5 auto, 160k, pedders gear in the front, rear springs original
couldn't even get the abs to work on the tar
bit of research on here & I have done the following,
new bendix hybrid pads
new rda slotted rotors
new Hel braided lines
new dual booster supplied by forum member hiluxy(very good to deal with & knowledgeable) many thanks to him
check/adjust rears which were only 10k old & ok
had done a flush as part of 160k sevice anyway
results nothing short of amazing
did the rotors etc first while waiting for the booster to turn up & this alone was a huge improvement, half the pedal travel & pressure required & abs works on tar in a crash stop, but still nearly standing on pedal
new booster fitted, very simple with easy instructions included & it just got better.
same pedal travel but now is just a squeeze for a crash stop, boat trailer has shiny discs as evidence they are working better due to the increased stopping power of car
cost less than $700 for the whole lot & my time (diesel mechanic, marine engineer amongst other things)
well worth the time & effort & this should be one of the standard mods to a hilux after changing factory suspension & crap h/t tyres
couldn't fit prado gear as I only have 15"wheels & am quite happy with the 31" goody's

alternative was fitting $3500 brakes to trailer which do not last & require constant maintenance
other alternative is a 200 series but wouldn't have the boat....... can wait

couple of unrelated things, serviced the tranny, fitted an auto cooler & now has eliminated most of the hunting between 3rd & 4th, holds 4th at 100km easily
fitted a 3" berklee exhaust, low & mid range much better, more free revving, not too loud but still runs out of breath topend, thinking of a roo systems chip next, mainly want to be able to pass jayco roadblocks & road trains without needing 2km of straight road to do it......
economy has been 13l/100km since I've had it, between 16-18 towing
cheers

Saw this on eBay and thought some guys might be interested. There was some talk a few months back but I can't find the thread on the brake bias.

You can pick up the full rod from Roadsafe for similar money. Saves screwing a extension piece on the existing rod

Hi All,
Has anyone got a picture of the brake adjust tool used to do this job, or can you just do this with a small screwdriver successfully?

If you can use a screwdriver, once you have the car jacked up and the rubbers removed, what are you supposed to actually do to adjust them? (IE: use it to lever the small wheel and turn it)?

Rich.

My handbrake has gone from 9 clicks down to 5. Interestingly, the manual says between 7 and 9 clicks is correct for the handbrake adjustment.

It did take me awhile, as I couldn't find the rubber plugs that Brendon referred to in his post on the first page. Turns out mine have no rubber boots at all. Should I be concerned?

A pic of the brake drum for reference...

To
Adjust the shoes do you slide the Pin in the pic to the front of the car or the rear in the pic?

It's not a pin, it's the edge of a star wheel. You have to turn it with a flat bladed screwdriver, or a proper brake adjusting tool.

Im wanting to upgrade my front brakes in a KUN26R. Do a bit of heavy towing and it doesn't take long for the factory brakes to get a bad shake, all good after a machining but doesn't take long for the shake to return. Is the DBA Slotted Rotor and Bendix Ultimate Combo still the way to go? Anything else need changing/adjusting for this set up? Cheers!

I've installed dba slotted rotors, upgraded pads and braided lines on my pre-VSC 2012 sr and it's still pathetic! I've also chased up a monster rides upgraded booster but to no avail. Keen to see what you find out

Handbrake adjustment is just under floor pan near the passenger door. It's a 10ml open spanner job.
