76c vs 82c Thermostat for 2013 1KD-FTV

Hey guys,

I‘ve searched the forums and found no relevant threads, so I’m posting this. I apologise if there is a previous similar thread, can’t seem to find it via the search bar.

I’m replacing my thermostat and the shop that I’m quite familiar with gave me a 76c thermostat. To be fair, I hadn’t noticed that stock thermostats are rated at 82c, they assured me that it’s compatible. It’s from HKT Japan ZB60TA-76.

So my question is, are there any pros and/or cons to run the 76c thermostat anyway on my bone stock 1kd? I’m also draining and filling the coolant with genuine Toyota coolant, topped up with distilled water when I take out the thermostat.

For context, I mainly drive around town running errands and the occasional 1-3 tips a year up the mountains (~150km one way) or long distance (~350km one way). I’m quite heavy footed when driving. Additional context, I’m from Sabah, known to some of you as North Borneo. Temps can range from 32c-40c during the day depending on time of the year.

Looking forward to hearing your opinions, thanks in advance!

76c thermostat should be fine in Malaysia, it just opens a little earlier and will suit the hot climates. If your Hilux runs 5c cooler you probably won't notice the difference.

Thanks for the reply, Gipsy! That’s what I thought too. Just wanted an additional input before installing it.
