Need advice- new power socket in dash.

Postby Scarecrow on Wed, 17 Aug 2016 7:48 +0000

Hi all,
I've just bought a 2011 Hilux SR5 (pre update model).
Id like to put either a dual USB charging point or a 12v power socket in the dash behind the trip info computer/clock and was just wondering if anyone could confirm my thoughts or give me some advice?
1st step is to remove the central dash components so that i can get behind the clock and also so i don't drill a hole thru any important components under the dash.
2nd step is to find out where exactly to connect the 12v socket or dual USB socket into? As fr as i know the socket is just a typical positive and negative lead. The usb points don't need to connect to the stereo to provide usb playback, im just after a charging point not in the stereo so i can keep charging cables out of the way.
3rd step is to actually drill the hole in the dash about 20-30 mm in diameter to put the socket into.
4th step is to put it all back together!

If anyone has any diagrams on how to connect the socket to the power source that would be really handy too!!

Cheers for the help!!

Put up a pic of where exactly in the dash ya want to put the socket. A small power supply like that ya can just wire to the back of the lighter socket.

I know it's not exactly what your after; but I mounted one inside the dash to the left-side of the glove box. That way I can pack the cables away in the glove box when I'm not using it; and when you need it there is only a short bit of cable coming out of the glove box. There is a generous gap around the glove box so you can still shut it properly when not using it.

I was to worried about touching the airbag to attempt an install in the top of the dash.

This fits nicely in the hilux, wired directly to my second battery

I would assume he wants to put the additional power sockets on top of the dash for any window mounted accessories without having cables dangle all the way to the bottom of the console.......

Good luck with that

Even with this installed on the dash you still have cables hanging

Image

Suggest with some small flexible conduit, velcro etc you can tidy up the cables nicely with the dual USB socket

I have something similar to this mounted to the top of my dash above the stereo.
It is from super cheap for around $50 you also have the option on changing the inserts. I have battery monitors on one side and twin usb on the other.
Works well if you don't mind drilling into your dash.

Thanks for all the replys!
Since i posted ive had a rethink about placing a power socket up behind the stereo on the dash and will probably just put a dual USB socket next to the existing power socket behind the 4wd and gear levers like TOYZX has done. A lot more simple to do i think!!

Ive got the solid kit dual usb ( link posted above in the threat) that fits in the factory switch hole perfectly. Also charges 2.1 amp each usb plug which from what i have found is the best you can get atm

Anyone found a simple solution to bring a power lead to the top middle of the dashboard from underneath?

I've seen a mate drill a hole and run a cable through the hole to his gps unit that is mounted on the dash. I assumed he must've run it up behind the headunit and drilled just above it. It looks quite neat as he has a dash mat that covers the hole in the plastic.

I was hoping there was a way to sneak a cable up near the windscreen edge of the dash without drilling a hole.

Run it along the base of the windscreen then come in behind the pillar cover and drop down into behind the glovebox. Ive got a socket wired in behind my glove box that my dashcam plugs into bit you could easily do the same for a gps. My gps just runs under my dashmat then down to an extra double socket like what was posted above that i mounted to the passenger trans tunnel plastic. The missus uses the spare one to charge her crap when we go camping. You can pick them up from jaycar for a cheaper than $50 as well. I did it this way as it makes it easier to switch my hema between cars
