Welcome to the site!

no, there are no places that will do this for you.. (although im sure if you paid them enough they would!)..

all the mods on this site are pretty much DIY..

depending on where you're located, you might some other members who are willing to give you a hand with the mod in exchange for copius amounts of beer though ! ;)

Where are you located, Scotty?
I in the outer eastern subs, Melbourne...... and enjoying the second six months of my retirement.......

This project isn't that hard.... just takes a bit of planning and a good second look before drilling/cutting etc.

Since posting above - we have done some big trips (Alice and back with tandem van)..... this mod performed perfectly without a glitch.

Only issue was disarming the central system and opening the tailgate without opening a front door..... it re-locks in around 30 secs...... and I am glad that I made provision for the bolts not to protrude as far as the tail-light assemblies..... clunk!

frats,
Rosco

ps - great mod, Steve9R got any more for us........?

Cheers for the replies guys.

Im over in Adelaide.

Will be more than happy to privde beer :)

I need this mod done as i store tools for work in the boot and recently had my old car broken into and lost all my tools for work, so i'm paranoid about them getting stolen again.

Planning any trips to SA Rosco?

I'll have another read through the thread and find out all what i need, and see if im up to having a go.

Cheers,
Scott

Was there a list of all items needed, or is it spread through out the thread?

The main issue i can see with this is when using the central locking and only opening the tail gate. The central locking would re-lock before i close it. I wouldn't usually open a door when going to my car to get something out the back when at work so this would be a problem for me.....

Any ideas??

yes you are correct.. but because the actuators in the tailgate lock, you can hear them quite audibly.. (they're definately not silent), and you can do what i do and simply push the bolts back in (takes 2 secs to do) before closing, or do what Rosco has done with his washer setup where even if the bolts are out they cant possibly hit anything. then simply lock the truck as normal..

Scotty,
I'm pretty confident you'll manage this mod. I suppose what took me the longest was actually starting on it..... then it was simply a case of one foot before the other....
As Steve says, if you are concerned about them opening again - they push back out of the way quite easily.
I set up the detent arrangement because I was concerned that they would vibrate closed - we had to do one two week trip away with them in place before I managed to finish the project and connect them up.......

No, sorry - not planning to come to Adelaide until later this year..... you'll have them (and other) projects all finished by then....

I found most of my stuff at Bunnings (big boys toy store).except for the actuators - they came from Supercheap or some other 3rd party outlet......... the ones I chose were "rear door" ones - they have less wires......

Undo the screws in your tailgate - take a look and I'm sure you'll soon make a quick start tot he project..... biggest deal was actually drilling the holes for the bolt...... mark once, check a dozen times and drill carefully....... if you stuff it up, a plug can be fitted to hide your mistake (not that you will make one) and....... at the end of the day - no-one is going to see these with the tail-gate closed.......

let us know how you are going with it........

frats,
Rosco

ps - happy to answer any questions as you go along.......

The kits available in the UK work by moving a sturdy block/bolt in front of the horn on the handle itself. This prevents the handle from moving so you can't open the tailgate. If the locking system actuates while the tailgate is open, you can still close the tailgate but as the handle doesn't move, you can't open it again. The device fits to the securing bolts on the handle. It shouldn't be too hard to make something up, you'd only need one central locking motor too.

Access is quite easy. Here's an extract from an instruction guide showing where the actuator fits:

The square bolt slides with the actuator to block the handle operation.

This might be the next mod I try to do.
I think one locking bolt should be sufficient.
I have an SR, with the stupid manual locks, is there any reason why this wouldn't work? I'll have to have a good look at it..
Might even look at piggy backing the rear door light switch and adding one to the tailgate, as well as a light in the canopy, that should solve the self locking problem. And I could really do with some lighting in the rear..

yeah the SR would work with my mod, but not the one HughAnka posted, as you dont have the centre handle..

Ok Steve and Rosco you boys are the experts on this mod. Going to give it a go however need a few things clarified. Will splice into the rear door central locking wires, on the left hand side pillar or the right? You both did something different, not interested in going under the steering wheel.

Steve one of your pictures has expired on page 1, any pictures of the left hand side? Once I see how it's done I can copy it.

Rosco what is the detent arrangement you talk of? Could you post a picture or describe this, unsure what this is.

Will post once I start and finish for others to use.

Cheers in advance :D
