HELP - Please help me identify this sound (vid included)

Postby Wamprat on Tue, 08 Dec 2015 5:39 +0000

Hi there,

I've been searching online a bit for some help but I thought if I post a video it might help me get to the bottom of this quicker.
Basically my '08 D4D makes this really annoying high pitched "cricket chirp" when I'm letting go of the clutch to accelerate.
It is more prominent with less gas and the more the car vibrates. It goes away once I've picked up a bit of momentum.
In the video I am not using the accelerator at all, just slowly releasing the clutch on a slight incline in first.

Any help would be appreciated. I'm sure this issue has been covered before so I appreciate your patience.

Thanks.

Does your clutch slip at all in any condition?

Does sound like crickets.

Could be thrust bearing as stated above.

Do you rest your foot (even lightly) on the clutch pedal when driving or between gear changes? Or a lot of trailer reversing?

I do unconsciously rest my foot on the clutch pedal a lot. Sometimes I make a conscious effort not to.
I never do any towing with it.

That'll do it. I'm led to believe this bearing is designed to spin intermittently, for the duration of a gear change only. Resting your foot on the pedal will have it engaged constantly causing premature wear.
Unfortunately, if this is the source of the noise, it's gearbox out for replacement.

Someone who actually knows this stuff can correct me.
