Mate there is alot of hilux's for sale around and you will go mad looking at all of them,,,,,,There is a good deal i got onto. The rspca turns over there cars through yagoona automotive,,,He sells SR 2009/2010 models for 38,000 to 39,000 and SR5's for 44,000 to 45,000. All his cars normally have less than 20,000klms on them. Mine had 16,250klms on it for 45,000. It may be to much out of the ball park but they are worth a look for a near new car. :|

haha thankyou VicRoads website. Did a Vehicle Status Check, details on the model and registration were accurate, then I saw that it has been recorded as a WRITE-OFF. Oh well keep looking I suppose...

yeah I would love a newer car, but 30 grand is a bit on it's own for a 21yo farmer working for the old man, might be able to score from him a small interest free 12 month loan at best haha! The eastern states are a better buy than SA, from what I've seen $3K-$5K cheaper than a comparable vehicle over here.

On that note, anyone selling a good 2006+ 4x4 D4D Manual Dual Cab Hilux, white or silver, with under 100K for less than $30000?? haha ;)

I've done housekeeping on this post by merging various posts.

We are trying to keep all those questions on buying advise to a few threads only instead of countless new posts.

Hey all, first post, and have only just joined :)

Well, from the sounds of it, all questions regarding "is this a good deal?" are to be kept here?

If so, then here goes :D

Looking at an 07 SR dual cab at the moment from a caryard in melbourne. It is an May 07 build (not sure if that makes a difference), D4D engine, 165000kms, ARB bullbar/rearbar/canopy, long range tank, near new 225/75/16 goodyear wranglers, and its auto. Seems to be straight, no damage repairs that I can see. It has full service history, and interior is almost spotless. The asking price is pretty much $30k with rwc/12 months reg.

I've had a look on carsales and trading post, and it seems to be an alright price for what it is, not a bargain, but not too expensive either considering its from a yard.

So what does anyone think, is this an alright price, coz I was thinking I could grab it from the yard in a few days if it seems to be.

Thanks guys!

ok ill help you out the best I can.

These are the things I look for when buying a second hand car.

Check logbooks to see how it has been looked after in the service side of things. If the injectors have been replaced it should be in the logbook or receipts.

Look for any panel damage.
Look underneath the truck to see how much damage is there, some 4x4's never see off road (probably none on here though)
Look at engine bay for any leaks. I also check behind the headlights and radiator for any bent supports or panels indicating front end smash. Also check under the tub for any bent supports.

Check the interior for any damage or rips and cleanliness. Check carpet for water damage.

Check that all the electrics work, i.e. windows, mirrors.

Then check tyre tread depth, including spare. then check tyre changing equipment.

Check that each piece of glass (windows) has Toyota written on it in the corner. If a piece of glass does not have the Toyota, then it has been replaced. This COULD indicate that it has been broken into at some point and possible a recovered stolen car. Most insurance companies won't replace factory glass as it costs more.

Lastly take the truck for a test drive without the stereo or music on.
A general rule is if everything feels and sounds fine then you should be ok.
If there is odd noises or vibrations or the truck just does not feel right to drive then something is obviously wrong.

Golden rule: Don't buy any vehicle without a current road worthy.

If you follow the above advice and don't find anything that you are not happy with then you should be right.

If the truck has been looked after and serviced there is no reason you can't get 500k's from them.

I hope this helps. Others can add if I have miss something.

If you can see damage or a certain type of damage then ask the seller an open question that will help with judging the seller.

for example if you look in the small crevas abd its full or red dirt ask has it ever been off road if they say no but the red dirt says yes then trust what you see

Do not point out danage either. For example if you see a bent bracket dont say here is a bent bracket just ask if the car has recived any damage.

A heck of a lot of the second hand hiluxes are ex mines. Be careful when buying these as they can have major dramas later on (especially if its been underground).

There are a few things to look for. A lot will look very good as they are not very old (usually 100k kms) so be careful.

There are companies paid specifically to clean ex-mines cars for sale so they cover up a lot of the damage. These go to the auction houses so be very careful buying from them.

One of the first things that rust on hiluxes is the mounts that hold the factory side steps on. If these are rusted bad it has most likely been driving through acid in the mines.

Check where the floor pan and side panel meet underneath the car. If these are rusting in between the join and pulling apart this is not a good sign. This is not normal on a low km car.

Make sure the care hasn't been resprayed underneath. Learn what a hilux should look lie underneath. Ive seen many that have had most of the underbody sprayed black to cover up all the rust and wear. It looks nice but it is not under that paint.

Check the condition of the roof. It will be faintly stained black if its been on a coal mine. Ive seen a few with a light line running across the top (from where they've removed the roll bar).

Lift up the floor panels at the door and see whats under there.

Also if the dash feels greasy they have applied this product that makes it look new. Gives it a thin greasy film that covers up the wear on the plastic. When it wears off the dash will not look anywhere near as nice.

I once pulled a massive chuck of coal out of the inside of a bulbar from a hilux. Just have a thorough look all around.

Hope that helps :)

Try get a log book service if you can and also get a professional to check it out OR better yet an uncle who is handy on cars. When I bought my lux privately the owner seemed like a good guy etc and I didn't bother getting my uncle to see it but did get a garage to check it out for $130, they didn't pick up any issues even though the tappet cover was leaking and the rear shocks were gone, amongst a couple other things. And I didn't really know what I was looking at the bash plates were in my way. I still regret not taking my uncle with me cause I know he wouldve picked up on it straight away and we couldve knocked a couple $k off.

As for what to do when you get it, grease all nipples, change all oils, that is engine, rear diff, front diff, tranfer, gearbox. Check coolant and brake fluid are still good. Maybe check your brake pads to get an idea of how long is left. Clean the MAF Sensor with crc (guide can be found somewhere here). Also check when the timing belt was last changed.

With the injectors they will sound like shit apparrently on a cold start. That explanation doesn't help if youre coming from a petrol engine like I did and it sounds like shit when cold even when theyre good lol. But you can buy a mini VCI cable and use that with a laptop and techstream software to look at your engine, do it on cold start and injector feedback values should be within -3 and +3.

Buying 2014 SR5 Second Hand

Postby dion_dal on Wed, 21 Feb 2018 7:34 +0000

Hey all!

Super excited to be buying my first Hilux. Im hoping for some advice on this car I've been looking at.

It's a 2014 white SR5 with 65K on the clock with a canopy. It was advertised for around $40k but I talked the dealer down to $38k.

I put a deposit on the car conditional on an acceptable vehicle inspection which I got back.

A couple problems: 1. The clutch is nearly gone. Meaning ill need to replace it soon.
2. There is some underbody rust (exhaust pipe is quite spotty) and the joins on what I believe is the transfer case is also rusty. The front tie down point is also a bit rusty which makes me believe they've probably been on the beach And needed to be snatched. The rear brakes also seem to have some rust on them.

I was talking to the mechanic who did the inspection and he reckons this (plus the heavy duty towball) indicate that the driver was probably doing some towing. Maybe a boat? Considering the rust.

I've put the purchase on hold till I get back to the dealer on the weekend. What do you all think? Should I be concerned about the rust? Is enough towing to wear out the clutch mean that the rest of the drive components will be more worn than you'd expect.

How much do you think I can knock off the price considering this new info. Considering Toyota quoted me 3K for a replacement clutch + fitting, I should be able to get at least that much off right?

(I have some photos too, but I'm on my phone and can't upload them so I'll do that tomorrow).

I've had a chat with a few of my friends and some think the rust is something worrying and some don't think it's a problem at all. Considering I'm sinking a lot of dough into this car and want it to last a while. I want to get it right :)

Thanks all for reading! And for your much needed advice

It seems a little dear given the things you've seen and the kM. Remember it has no new car warranty left, probably needs tyres, rego?, needs a clutch and you are up for about $1200 stamp duty and transfer on top of that. Given you can buy a 2015-16 Demo SR5 with 3000kM on it still with new car warranty drive away for $50k advertised (meaning negotiate it down) you can see what I mean. Examples just to show what I'm getting at:

https://www.carsales.com.au/demo/detail ... 7857/?Cr=2
https://www.carsales.com.au/demo/detail ... 5823/?Cr=6

Some cheaper Private (but you will pay stamp duty on top of these):

https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... 3244/?Cr=9
https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... 390/?Cr=14

Here is a couple more to consider for comparison, just filtered by kM and in NSW (added the last one for thought!):
https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/deta ... 452/?Cr=34
https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/deta ... 100/?Cr=39
https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... 317/?Cr=70
https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/deta ... 898/?Cr=71
https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/deta ... 333/?Cr=74
https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... 415/?Cr=93

My 2010 dual cab auto SR5 was $46k as a demo with 3000kM on it covered in options. They went up a bit by 2014 but I just feel $40k is too much for one that sounds like it has had a bit of a hard life, which in itself isn't too much of an issue. But when you can buy lower kM cars better looked after for close to the same money.....

Make sure whatever you buy has been serviced by time or km (whichever comes first).

Don't be scared off by autos either, once you own one you will never buy a manual again.

Hey HK1837 thanks for the message.

Tyres thankfully are fine. with only 80% wear. Though would be interested later one day in upgrading to some slightly larger BFG AT ko2 :P

Thanks for looking up those cars!

Ideally I don't want to be paying any more than 40K tops. so I feel that mostly puts any of the newer models out of reach :/

Do you think this car is worth it if i could get the price down to say 33k?

Re: Buying 2014 SR5 Second Hand

Can only try! It may be OK at $33k, will end up costing you over $34k by the time you transfer it plus the clutch so you are near $37k. It doesn't look too bad, someone has been under there with strategically placed pressure pack spray though and it has been cleaned everywhere too.
There are a lot of SR5 dual cab when you do a broader search $1k either side of $40k with half the km you are looking at. Some really good value V6 autos too with lower km around $35k drive away. Some more examples:

https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/deta ... 4100/?Cr=7
https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/deta ... 0798/?Cr=2
https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/deta ... 8669/?Cr=3
https://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/deta ... 898/?Cr=38
https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... 445/?Cr=42

Any at dealers will be negotiable if you aren't trading. So if it was me i'd be looking a bit harder but it is your choice in the end.

Both of these are in Sydney, around the same km you are looking at and are $35k or thereabouts:
https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... 00/?Cr=146
https://www.carsales.com.au/private/det ... 35/?Cr=154
The black one may still have some new car warranty left. Both are private so should have wriggle room in the price.

You guys are legends. Thanks for the advice.

I guess I'll keep looking!

Also HK thanks for the links. I was trying to avoid private because I like the 3 months stat warranty you get from dealers. But that 2015 private sale looks great!
