Dealer can be good but the Stat warranty is not as good as a few months of new car warranty. Plus if that black one has even a few weeks warranty left you can extend it for say 12 months.

Toyota will sell you extended warranty if the vehicle is low km and still in new car warranty. They all will. Some are factory warranty, some an insurance type warranty. There is a Redbook Warranty too, open the link on that black 2015 and click on the “eligible for extended warranty” link in blue. They all cost though. I extended my Mrs’ RX350 and it was about $1800 for 7 years 150000km up from 4 years factory.

See link.

Cool!

I've always been told to be wary of "extended warranties" on second hand vehicles. I guess this is not your standard dodgy dealer extended warranty.

Thanks again everyone!

Much appreciated.

Unknown to many People but in NSW a motor dealer has a legal rite to include a 12month stat warrant on all cars sold.

Check with consumer affairs. :)

http://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/ftw/C ... tor_cycles)

Second-hand vehicles (other than motor cycles)

The dealer guarantee for a second-hand motor vehicle which had driven less than 160,000 km and was less than 10 years old when purchased is limited to 5,000 km after purchase, or 3 months after purchase, whichever occurs first.

Where the dealer guarantee does not apply

The following scenarios cover situations where a dealer guarantee doesn't apply:
•a motor vehicle sold by a motor dealer at auction if a dealer’s notice specifying that the dealer guarantee does not apply is attached to the motor vehicle at the time of sale
•a substantially demolished or partially dismantled motor vehicle that is purchased by the holder of a motor vehicle recycler’s licence
•a motor vehicle sold by a motor dealer that is unregistered and, at the time of sale, requires substantial repair
•incidental or accidental damage that occurred to the motor vehicle after the sale by the motor dealer and when it was not in the possession of the motor dealer
•damage which occurred after sale and was caused by misuse or by negligence of the driver, or because the motor vehicle was used for motor racing or motor rallying
•superficial damage to the paint-work or upholstery of a second-hand motor vehicle that would have been apparent on a reasonable inspection at the time of sale
•the sale of a second-hand vehicle to which the prescribed defect notice (either dealer notices 6, 8 or 10) and inspection report was attached, including an estimate of the cost of repairing the vehicle. The purchaser of such a vehicle is allowed to recover the difference between the reasonable cost of repairing any defect specified in the notice and the amount estimated in that notice as the reasonable cost of that repair.

What to look for in a used dual cab, 4x4, 3.0D4D?

Postby TBJ on Thu, 23 Aug 2018 4:38 +0000

Hi guys, new member here but been lurking around for a bit, I've decided that I'm going to sell my current daily non-4wd and sell the old single cab farm ute and thinking I want to buy a Gen 7 Lux, looking at a diesel, dual cab, under 30k, it'll be my everyday car as well as my weekend rig, So what are things I should look out for? known issues I might have to fix etc. basically a buying guide. what sort of KM's I should be looking at for what sort of money?, I think I've decided on my first mods already but want to see what you think. Bar-work is a must as I drive in the country a lot for work so roo's are always around, and also probably a roof console (who makes a good one or should I make one?) and possibly a tray if it doesn't come with one as for what I will use it for its more useful, a snorkel, tires. what do you guys think are the first must have mods? any info is appreciated as well as opinions and help as I've not had much to do with the more modern Lux's as most of my mates have cruisers, patrols or rangers.

Welcome mate, this question has been asked a few times... have a look at the link below and perhaps do a search of the site.

Good luck with your search for a new vehicle, like anything it will come down to cost and colour :)

If you must have the diesel buy one with the A750F 5spd auto. Far better box. For what it’s worth I’d buy a V6 one, and these come with the A750F from 2005 whereas diesels don’t get it until about 2013.

Points to look for:

Bigger brakes on diesel from 2011 (V6 from 2012).
A750F auto (V6 all, diesel 2013).
2500kg towing capacity from 2012 model (2250kg prior).
17” wheels and 265/65/17 tyres start on 2011 diesel and also on TRD in 2008-9. V6 gets them with 2012 model. This is important if you want bigger tyres as the biggest legal if the car had 15” wheels originally is 265/65/17. You can go bigger with the Hiluxes that had 17” originally.

Mods I reckon the best to do to a pre 17” wheel version is Ultimate 50mm lift, 120 Prado front brakes and 17” wheels. I see no benefit in a snorkel unless you need it (dust or creek crossing).

Watch out for other people’s offloaded problems with a used diesel.

So what's wrong with the manuals and the 3.0D4D diesels? in terms of a good mechanic check any suggestions?
any issues I should look out for and be aware of?

Well nothing really if its been well maintained. But do a search here on injector seats to give you a bit of an overview.

The manual gearbox is pretty solid unless its been a tow vehicle. As for the diesel, keep away from vehicles that have been chipped and if its at about 150,000kms, its time for new injectors (though some vehicles go past 300,000km without any problem).
I might be wrong.

3.0L D4D manual actually drives better than the auto. Strange as most of this class vehicle with tiny diesel and manual are better with auto but not the Hilux.
If you are going to tow much you want an auto though. Modern clutches are a pain in the bum if loaded too much.

Do yourself a big favour and drive one of each first, and drive a V6 auto too. Then decide.

What to look for and check before purchasing a used lux?

Postby TBJ on Fri, 28 Sep 2018 3:03 +0000

As some of you know I'm in the market for a used Gen 7 Facelift SR5 dual cab with the 3.0D4D, what should I look for, any known issues that can occur, what should I check for? should I check for water damage if so how?, there appears to be rusty seat sliders on many of the ones I've looked at is this something to worry about or just normal?
as this will be the most I've spent on a car ever (consolidating the work 4wd and the daily together) I'm just not wanting to buy a lemon, or something thats been flogged too hard.
Thanks

If the seat sliders are rusted the car has been for a swim!
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

this surely can't be 100% as one of the ones I looked at was a stock standard one at a toyota dealership? is there any other tells that could be used in conjunction with this?

Look for spark plugs and walk away if not there!

Look for:

Sagged front suspension.
5spd auto (not 4spd).
Transmission fluid colour.
Proper servicing (km or time whichever comes first).

Can’t help you with diesel engine stuff.
