What do you do with your scratched bar work?

What do you do with your scratched bar work?

Postby Stu.wrf450 on Wed, 05 Feb 2014 3:39 +0000

Couldn't find a topic that was relivant to this new topic.

What do you do when you scratch your bar work on a rock? Or stone chips?

I use rust converter then touch up paint with a brush.
Any better ideas?
Cheers, Stuart

I found heat proof or high temp black paint in a spray can was almost the perfect match to my black bar work. Every 6 months I walked around the car with a bit of wet and dry sand paper to remove the surface rust, a tin of spray paint and a piece of cardboard, usually an opened up carton to stop the overspray. Came up a treat.

I thought ARB bars are powdercoated black from factory and not sprayed. I read somewhere with a heatgun you can soften the powdercoat and get restore it's shine on the scratches providing you don't get to heavy handed on the heat and the scratches don't break down to the bare metal. I have not tried this and don't blame me if you stuff the finish on your bar.

A mate of mine like to restore old trail bikes and he sands back the plastic with 120-400 grit sandpaper to remove the deeper gouges then hits it with a heat gun to get the shine back on the surface and remove the rub marks. Might try a small inconspicuous area of the bar and report back, I've got some powdercoated rims as well and might try a small area on them to see how the come up.

I am lead to believe ARB or any powdercoater can not powdercoater metallic,eg silver.
My bullbar is from ARB painted and my side and rear step is painted with a spray gun.

nothing works better than some matt black rattle can for my arb bar i usually do it every few months after a wash if its been hit hard with scratches and chips... every other time i coat it in tire shines and it brings it up like brand new ;)

That new armour-all spray on coating is pretty good at stopping scratches. I have been using it on mine with great success. Been putting it on my roof and front quarter panels to stop them getting scratched by low branches and the like out scrub. You just have spray at least three coats so it's thick enough to peel off in one piece.

If you're gunna worry about a few scratches on your bar work, then I suggest you keep to bitumen roads as most of the desert tracks (Gunbarrel, Anne Beadell, Canning etc) are very overgrown and your bar work and body work take a hammering - literally. The Survey Waggon is so badly scratched it needs a respray as all the leading edges of the bodywork are scratched to bare metal and the bullbar, rails and steps are about as bad. Wear them like a badge of honour.

Pretty much if we keep on painting over the scratches, the bar work will end up as big as this baseball haha
