This is why you clean your MAF sensor

This is why you clean your MAF sensor

Postby boxhead55 on Sun, 01 Dec 2013 4:51 +0000

On a hilux the air filter is replace every 30000km

Now you clean it quite a few times in between but next to no one cleans the MAF sensor .

Image

This unit had covered 31000 km and was way out of specification

Easy way to check is to remove it.
Others can use a scan tool to check

It should output close to .37 grams a second key on engine off.

This one was outputting .78 grams a second key on engine off

This is because of the two sensor wires

Image

The wire on the left is a heated wire that gets to 600 deg c

The other wire is a sensor wire.

Both need to be very clean to work correctly as this one was not. It is very dirty

The reading comes from the slight power adjustment to keep the wire at 600 deg c.

So if the wire is dirty it will be less sensitive to the air passing over it.

This means the computer sees there is more air entering the engine than what actually is.

So the computer injects more fuel for the incorrectly measured air. This causes black smoke and pore performance.

Image

The sensor on the left here is a intake air temp sensor. This lets the computer know what temp air is going In to the motor is at.

This is used in conjunction with other sensors to calculate air density.

Image

Hope you find this as interesting as I do.
And please keep your MAF sensors clean.

Good info once again Boxhead. What products are safe to use for cleaning it?

Cheers,

Chris.

Very informative BH. I clean mine regularly, but just learnt I've only been cleaning half of it :? The air temp half. I had no idea the other 2 wires were hidden away up there. Sounds like a 2 minute job for this morning :D
Cheers Rod

Planning to clean mine this arvo. Don't have crc or wurth maf cleaner. Can i substitute it with electronic contract cleaner? Doesn't leave residue i believe.

This one is appropriate.
I'm glad I took the cover off to have a bit of a look.
I cleaned the MAF sensor today and also the filter with the CRC product. Never had a problem with the O ring but I did find another problem.
Can anyone spot it.
;) ;) ;)
Don't let the arrows give it away.

Looks like its been overtightened and split the hose???
I had my injectors done the other day by a well known mechanical business and they over tightened the front bolt on the intercooler driving the bolt up and punching a hole in the underside of the intercoolers plastic end tank.
I only found it cause i am pedantic with my vehicles and traced the oil spray back to the source which was the bolt through the intercooler. I took it back and they repaired it without charge, but then had the audacity to match mark a bolt on the engine cover as if to imply i had done it.
A week later i found a filter wrench that had been dropped down between the winch and the ac condenser. I choose to return it for the embarrassment factor. It was one of those 'now you know that i know' moments.
Its hard to find a good, trustworthy mechanic.

Nah Cruiserdog.
The hose clamp in the first photo had not been put back on, was sitting down loose down on the EGR body.
Refitted it in the correct position and retightened it in the second pic.
All fixed.. A simple mistake.
What I was trying to highlight is it pays to put a second set of eyes over your vehicle after a service.

Hey Boxhead, under what conditions should the elements be sprayed, cold or warm? I bought some crc maf cleaner and I think it said something about heating the element up so it was warm before spraying. Thoughts?

Shit no. Off for at least 2 min.
If you got that heated wire when hot
You could crack the ceramic covering it

Always cold
Always off for at least 2 min
And remove oring as some have found it swells.

Have fun.

also note, you 'can' use a cotton tip to clean those wires, BUT be VERY GENTLE and VERY CAREFUL, as the last thing you want to do is break them!
