Hope it was WD40 'Contact cleaner' that you used and not the lubricant.

Thanks BH - yet again.

I can find no mention of cleaning this sensor any where in my service schedule, so we are dependent on whoever does our work both knowing about the need to clean, and also caring enough to do it.

My previous experience with dealer servicing indicates that it probably wouldn't get done. Perhaps things have changed, as your attitude, and that of some others on this board is certainly a breath of fresh air.

If it's not in your service schedule, i'd take it off and check if it's clean / give it a good clean just to be sure. It's easy to do, if I can do it, anyone could. ;)
Cheers,
Jay

Just did mine after replacing the stock Toyota paper filter with KNN oiled filter 18 months ago. Although it wasn't in bad shape back then, I also cleaned the MAF while at it. Was not happy to see the glow wires and temp sensor were covered in this grayish oily residue 26000 KM later. KNN specifically claim "after extensive research" that their filters don't gunk up MAF sensors. The filter was put in new from the box and the car's done strictly city and highway. This goes to show that nothing beats customer research. I'm going back to genuine paper.

I removed the o-ring before spraying it this time, because the last time it swelled up and I had to let it sit for a few hours before it fit again. Used strictly MAF cleaner.

When I cleaned my maf sensor with crc, the wires did not come up shiny new, they are still a dull brown and thats after 2/3 of the tin. Is it replacement time?

Are there any ways I can test the resistance of it? Surely there are specific tests I could do with an ohm meter?

Not necessarily. Try holding the nozzle closer, about a centimeter and spray with short bursts. As it is a heated wire, all the dirt can become crusted so it might take a bit longer to come off.

Hi all,

Boxhead you mentioned that the MAF sensor should read close to .37 gm/sec key on engine off, my 2013 D4D (6000km) reads .28 gm/sec engine off and 15.48 gm/sec at 81c idle, after reading through the techstream data threads these readings seem a little out of spec, or are these pretty normal for a vehicle this new?

Any info/thoughts would be much appreciated.

Imho disel Hilux = high maintenance

Petrol hilux gives almost the same performance a little more thirsty but the cost of continuous maintenance of diesel quickly catches up to the same as a petrol hhilux in fuel wise but petrol has far far less issues and minus the embarrassing loud noisy motor.

I don't know whether this has been mentioned.
I am finding that a lot of snorkel installers are using the building type silicone sealers.
This will coat the hot wires and give you a false reading. The gas as it dries out.
So, consumers beware of this and make sure they use an auto sealant when they fit your snorkel.
