Getting that turbo whoosh noise

Getting that turbo whoosh noise

Postby Serviceman on Wed, 25 Sep 2013 6:12 +0000

Hey guys and girls, I have herd a few hilux's about with exhausts that get the nice whoosh noise between gear changes,

I have herd many things

Remove the cat,
Remove the muffler
Fit a 3" exhaust

I have done all 3 and can't seem to get much more than a throaty growl,

I'm just looking to see who has got the noise and how they acheaved it,

My only guess is its either the raised boost of a chip or possibly the throttle control module? Thing for smother pedal control

If anyone can help me please sing out,

And I know there's going to be someone that carrys on that doesn't like it, please keep that opinion to yourself.

Thanks casey

yeh my car does this, since fitting a 3" exhaust mainly when its under load and changing up a gear, below 2500rpm..... You'll soon get sick of the noise. Im borderline now ,when your picking the kids up from school in a 40 zone or trying to be inconspicuous,at your kids sports functions....... :D :D :D

and yeh its the internal gate on the turbo........

Though mine is a manual, same experience.

Try backing off at 2200rpm going up a hill in third gear. ;)

That is mental, don't apologise,

Not a blow off valve, just the noise diesels can make, I'm going to have to try all this

I had it quite noticeable on mine just removed the muffler and replaced with straight through. I later modded the exhaust and eliminated a bend coming over the diff, it became a lot more noticeable. So the straighter you can make the exhaust the better as cizzink11 mentioned.

I have asked my work mate what actually makes the whoosh noice on his Nissan Sylvia 180 and he explained to me that the noise that happens is when the air is getting sucked in you get a sucking noise and when it is released it goes through the turbo blades making the noise you hear. As for the blow off valve or waste gate they increase the sound of the air being released
Hope this helps

and he also said putting a better air filter also helps
