Fair enough Dan. I would have preferred to get a new valve/bung but have had very poor service from my local Toyo dealership and just couldn't be bothered to ask them if it can be purchased as a separate item.

I guess one way of testing it would be to take the box out and submerge the lower half of the filter box into water ...
I guess this would put the whole should I, shouldn't I seal it thing to rest for everyone else - Probably needs to be tested with a non-defective valve though which rules us both out

$800 is heaps. I thought $650 was bad enough where I am.

The safari snorkels are usualy around the $450 mark and then about $150 to $200 for install. But as said before, its not that complex to do and will give you piece of mind that everything is done right.

Are people sealing the valve in the air box ?
I did but now I'm wondering if it's a bad thing to have done

Also what's this sensor safe sealant? I used silicone

Cheers utemad

Some people seal the valve - only reason would be doing deep water crossings. Even so the valve is designed to be one way only. I left mine unsealed as any rain water ingress thru the top of the snorkel into the air box will be released by the valve.

It is recommended you use sensor safe RTF silicon as some aromatics in non-sensor safe sealants can interfere with sensors affecting air to fuel mix ratio etc.

possibly another thing to consider with the bung , is the actual "pot" that it is attached to on the bottom of the housing. It seems to be removable as it has a latch on one side and a bit where it hinges on the other side. I tried removing it and broke the plastic that locks it on to the housing :? :? :? Thought it can't be that bad  i'll ring toyota and see how much another bit is :? They don't sell it as a separate item :? $800 for a new housing  like f#*k i said :x Super glued it back together put it back on and sealed all around the base of it with silastic. Now, here is my extra f#*kup observation :geek: this little "pot" is sealed only using a material gasket rather than a rubber one. I'm wondering if this is the cause of some slight leakage that people are encountering :?: :?: Anyway as said , i sealed around mine...

Thanks Oggy,
Think I will check that gasket out.
The thread below is very relevant - as suggested by Bullzye the valve should work when the engine is creating vacuum but this is of little use if the rest of the filter box fails to create a good seal.

Am leaning towards using one of these myself Oggs. This time of year the bugs are out in force up here. The uni ram head pre-filter can get clogged with bugs pretty quick. Went out with the local 4X4 club - they like to travel close in convoy so one of these filters would work better than a ram head sock on dry dusty tracks.
Looking at Donaldsons site http://www.westernfilters.net.au/product_info.php?cPath=74&products_id=161
Can anyone give any informed experience/preference to either brand?
Cheers

Nope - over 1" clearance thru entire swing of door
