Trouble reading dipstick

Trouble reading dipstick

Postby mack on Sat, 17 Mar 2012 5:43 +0000

After changing oil it was hard to read the oil level, I think I saw this tip somewhere on this forum but cant find it.
- Get two pairs of pliers and twist the end of the dipstick about 90 degrees, this helps hold the oil when reading the level. Works reasonable well.

also give the end of the dipstick a light sand with emery paper,as the oil sits in the low spots and is way easier to read the level

Anyone else notice when you check the oil it only shows up on one side of the stick?

It's because one side of the dip stick is sliding on the tube. You should try reading the oil level on cab over scanias, the dip stick is about 5ft long.
Always read the lower side of the dip stick and if unsure leave the dip stick out for a few minutes to let the oil run out of the tube.

Anyone got a photo of one of these custom bent dipsticks?

You only have to put a quarter of a twist in the bottom of it.
Then you can read the oil perfectly.
I can't take a photo until I get mine back from warranty work being done at ARB which won't be until about next Monday. If none are up by then I will put up a photo.

I grab a bit of paper towel, and lay the dipstick against it for a second or two. Compare the marks on the stick with the stain on the towel and you can easily read the level.
