Electrically disconnecting the front Diff - ADD models only

This shape has always been 4wd high and low on the stick. There are 2 black wires on the module. You sure you got the correct one?

aahh, Ok, thanks Matt! I thought I had the right one, I'll get outside and re-do / re-think the whole thing again.

Thanks,

Where does the add disconnect ? At the diffs or out at the wheels ? Ie do the cvs and drive shafts spin when in 2wd? (I know the diff doesn't but not sure on rest of it)

Perhaps this thread needs to be re-titled : -

"Electrically disconnecting the front diff - ADD equipped models only"

SRs have had ADD since at least 2013 according to posts in this thread. Who knows how long SRs have had ADD ?. Easy to check whether or not ADD is fitted.

Not attacking you man but you're the only person to suggest that. If you have add, great, but I think you'll find you have an sr5 if you do.

If it is a steep hill and you are going straight and not turning you could still engage 4 low. It only when you are turning when it becomes a problem.

It's all a bit confusing. My 2014 SR (build and plate) definitely has it. A previous post in this thread is from someone with a 2013 SR which appears to have an ADD actuator on the diff housing, so clearly SRs do have ADD. (on two SRs at least :D ) The question is - from when ???

My handbook refers to "A.D.D. (automatic disconnecting differential) (if equipped) ". Clearly not all models in all markets are ADD equipped.

You're definitely the man Boxhead, :D so what's the answer ? Short of crawling under every one I see and looking, I don't know.

It doesn't affect me, but I would be curious to know for sure, from someone with Boxhead's product knowledge, whether or not earlier post 2005 SRs had some other way of stopping the front tailshaft from spinning in 2wd, if not ADD. A spinning front shaft with no load seems, for some reason I don't understand, to flog out front shaft unis prematurely. Having taken pains to avoid this in the previous model (hubs or ADD depending on model), it seems strange that Toyota would allow it in 2005 onward, unless of course it is another accountant's decision :( .

Well it was originally destined for Queensland

I don't know unless it was a mine spec special order if that is the case there would be 1000 of them out there as a special run you need to order a thousand units. Like rio or thrifty mine hire.

Pic of the car and the diff? Pull your glovebox and see if the module is there?

I was tongue in cheek with the Queensland thing :D . It was ordered by a Qld dealer and redirected to Vic. Possible it was for a mine, but as it is an extra cab tub, I would be surprised if that configuration was for a mine, and if redirection would happen for a mine order. I'd be even more surprised if a Toyota production line made such a mistake.

I ordered and paid for what I got. I got what I ordered and paid for. All the paperwork matches. The previous post about a 2013 SR was from SteveHastings, I think. Perhaps he can confirm or not ??

It's only my curiosity driving this, but we'd probably get closer to an answer if it was accepted that what I have said about my vehicle is correct and look for the "why" :)

C'mon Matt, give me some credit :D . It's an SR (see previous post)

Photos aren't in my skill bag but I pulled the glovebox a couple of days ago and the module is there, as well as the appropriate wires in the green plug. I haven't pulled the black wire and wont until I get the switch and am ready to wire it up. (plan to wire some other stuff at the same time to keep it all tidy) The ADD module is on the diff housing.
The front tailshaft can be easily turned by hand when the car is stationary and in 2wd. It's not an optical illusion

Like I said, it would be helpful to accept what I have said and try to solve the "why". Maybe it is a running change ? If so from when ? Or is it part of the 2014 update ? Buggered if I know, but it is stretching the imagination a bit to suggest that a one off has occurred in production.

Thanks Matt,

I had the right black wire the first time, and after a half day of mucking around, I've got it working. The thing is, I've done it exactly the same as the first time trial run. I think the problem is when I'm new to using 4WD in auto's and when I tried it out the first time I wasn't allowing enough time for the ADD to enagage.

Regardless, all's well now, so thanks to all for the information provided.

Cheers,

Jim

I'm curious to see it nicebike. Not a case of doubting your shaft spinning abilities. Is it an sr with flares and trac etc?
