Electrically disconnecting the front Diff - ADD models only

PostPosted: Sat, 26 Jan 2008 9:10 +0000

Spoke to my mechanic today, he has put a switch in another lux that stops the front diff from engaging the ADD (also the dash indicator light) when low range is engaged. Very handy when needing a lower gearing on hard surfaces. Will find out which cable to interupt next week as I know the owner of the ute.

This would only help if your 4wd and/or low range is electronically operated. I think the auto boxed hiluxes are? My diesel SR manual has automatic hubs and a lever to operate the transfer case. If you want free wheeling hubs then you will have to wait for some engineering company to come up with a mod kit. Does anyone know of one?

He has sent me some photos, its the blue wire with a bit of masking tape on it. He discribed it as a multi plug on the RHS of the transfer case. Mine is filthy and am having trouble getting a good look. I think the plug is on the top RH of the case.
See how you go .

Hi, may be a stupid response but what if you just unplug the A.D.D from the diff. would this work?

My Sr has no ADD. Got underneath it to check today and found the only thing that comes out of the diff is the breather. To prove that I wasn't seeing things got a strap wrench wrapped it round the tail shaft and she moved forward.I think its like the old school fwds that both front and back axles are always spinning and the transfer case mechanically connects the two diffs together to become a 4WD be it in low range or high. Without creating more confusion I dont think the hilux has a centre diff lock as it is a selectable 4wd and not a constant 4wd.Mine is an 07 and it could be diffrent to an 05, 06, or 08.Mark

This is from the Model outline for AUS from the ELWD etc that we had earlier last year, shows which models should have it.

4WD DUAL CAB
1GR-FE (v6) : STANDARD FOR SR ONLY (they many mean sr5)
1KD-FTV (diesel) : STANDARD FOR SR, OPT FOR DLX
(i believe they refer to dlx = sr, and sr= sr5 i guess)

4WD EXTRA CAB
1GR-FE (v6) : Standard (all range?)
1KD-FTV (diesel) : Standard for SR OPT for DLX

Are you sure it is for our version as the colours in the 6 pin plug on the front diff are:
RED
YELLOW
RED/BLACK
RED/YELLOW
RED/WHITE
WHITE/BLACK

There is no blue wire that has anything to do with the front diff.

At a guess I would say by cutting the yellow or the red wire would disable the front diff as these two wires goto an electric motor.

looking over the EWD,
I guess (and i have no real idea ) if u put a kill switch that isolated the sensor from the 4wd Gear from actuating the ADD motor when you set it to L4/L2, then i guess it is possible, well at least with a manual one id say.

from the EWD it required the switch to pickup the change from H2->H4 and activate the ADD Motor.

cut from the EWD Below
""
H2 H4 (4WD)
When the 4WD shift lever turns to H4 position, this signal is input into the 4WD control ECU, and the
4WD control ECU actuates the A.D.D. shift motor.
The operation of the A.D.D. shift motor causes the A.D.D. shift fork and sleeve to move towards the front
differential, thus engaging the front drive shaft and the front differential. As a result, the drive force from
the transfer is transmitted to the front wheels.
""

so if u have a switch to break/or open that control circuit, it would not engage the front DIF.

Should be part T 3 from page 37(40) EWD.
T-3 "Is Closed with the transfer shift lever at H4 position"

Hi
Has anybody been brave enough to cut one of the wires going to the A.D.D yet to find the right wire colour ??? to disable the front diff in 4WD mode.
