Hi , i have just done this mod ( 2011 sr5). i have installed the relay and all switch lights ect work correctly. but when the switch is off , it is in low 2 , you have to turn the switch on to get low 4. how can i reverse this. is it something to do with how i wired up the relay.
cheers

Piss easy mod, cut the black wire, extend wires to a switch and yer done.
Waiting on an illuminated 2wd switch then will rewire through nc relay.
Great mod, so handy, thanks for sharing :)

The thread says SR5 only.

I understand why this such a simple mod for an SR5, but why can't something similar be done with the SR ?

My SR has what looks exactly like an ADD actuator on the front diff housing. There is even a label advising to use only ADD oil.

So surely the activation is still electrical but probably via a switch somewhere under the floor on a linkage, instead of a dash switch.

If I am right, how do we find the wire ? Or do I simply look for connections to the actuator, find the right wire, and run a long loop back to switch in the cabin and return to the actuator ?

If I am wrong, how is the ADD actuator powered in the SR ?

I suggest reading the topic from the beginning

I think you could read it a hundred times and still be confused why your SR has ADD front diff :D very strange.

You need to establish if it definitely is ADD and if so, if it is wired up and working as per an SR5. time to get out the car stands and do some experimenting.

Did you buy the car new? is it possibly an SR5 and you don't know it?

Definitely SR. Definitely looks like an ADD actuator. FWIW, I thought everything hilux/surf without locking hubs was ADD.

Without hubs or ADD, the tailshaft spins the whole time. This was recognised as not good many, many years ago.

I think I'll pull the glovebox out first and have a look for anything that matches with what is described in the thread.

Might give the tailshaft a twist while I'm at it, although I'd have to get dirty to do that :D

OK -

Tailshaft spins freely, as I was sure it would.

Without pulling the glovebox, I can see the green plug shown in Batman's very helpful photos (thank you Batman) and the couple of wires I can see with the glovebox still in match the colours on Batman's photos.

I'm ordering the switch !!! Pretty sure it won't turn ugly when I proceed :D

No low range 2wd was one of my concerns in getting a vehicle without locking hubs. I was pretty sure there would be some electrical fix, and am pleasantly surprised to find it this easy, thanks to NewHilux and particularly Batman.

To be sure, just pull the black wire pin from the socket and then test it, when you see if it does or does not work you will know if you have or have not wasted your money buying the switch :D

So do some SR's have an ADD?

Well, I'd say the presence of the actuator and what appears to be the wiring is conclusive, although as ashh said, I will test before I go live.

If earlier post 2005 SRs don't have ADD, and if they don't have freewheelings hubs, can someone let us know what has been built into the front driveline to stop the front tailshaft spinning in 2wd.??? I wouldn't be surprised to learn that SRs have had ADD for a long time.

Considering that the biggest cost (to the manufacturer) of ADD is the ADD actuator itself I'd doubt they'd have fitted them to plenty of SRs and just not connected the wiring up.

nicebike - that's the thing about the SRs, the front driveshaft DOES spin when not in 4wd it just doesn't get engaged via the transfer case

this is a good mod to have. low speed towing an even when we go off road in between tracks I leave it in low 4 & just flick the switch for 2wd low

I'm convinced of the usefulness of 2WD Low, I used to have free-wheel hubs on my 2003 SR5. I would like to have this on my 2014 SR5, but either I've down something wrong (don't think so), the black wire has changed, or it doesn't work on these models?

DOES it still work, now that 4WD high and low are both selected by the stubby lever ?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers,

Jim
