Just my thoughts.

You are dead right there Diego, the relay is surplus to needs, unless you are fitting a luminated switch as BCH did, the relay in this case powers the switch I believe.

With no light in the switch there is no need for a relay because the wire we are switching comes from the 4WD computer module and the signal it carries is used to switch the relay for the ADD. There are full Hilux electrical diagrams for the early 06, 07 and possibly 08 Hiluxs available, you can PM me if you want a copy.

The wire that is being switched is quite small, and carries very little load, it is a signal wire from the 4WD computer module. You can use any wire you have, I used one about the same size as the one I cut to switch.

I think I already have a copy somewhere thanks anyways Steve.

Plus I already did the mod this arvo, just using a simple 30 amp switch from super cheap soldered into line off the control wire.

What an easy mod I really dont know why toyota didnt include this as standard. It is going to make reversing my camper in to my garage so much easier and I wont be worrying about binding up my axles anymore.

To be honest its been a while since I have been on here because all I was hearing was the same old stuff over and over again. So glad that I popped my head in to have a look as I learnt something new.

Thanks

The NC relay is only needed if you want to use a switch with a light in it, otherwise, its not required. The NC (Normaly Closed) relay keeps the circuit closed normally, and when it reicives power from your switch, it opens the circuit, and the 4wd wont opperate.

Or you can keep it simple:

If your not using a custom rocker type switch, you just need a normal on/off type switch and a length of wire roughly the same size as the wire you cut, as very little power is drawn through the circuit.

But you miss out on this:

This one has been bounced around for ages and the only option you have is to go to a wreckers and source a complete SR5 front diff assembly. It will then need to be wired to engage the ADD manually because I reckon it would be too difficult to wire it in to the factory loom to make it worthwhile.

No one make manual free wheeling hubs for them. There is no other way to do it other than fitting an SR5 ADD (auto disconnect diff).

No It can't be done in an SR because they dont have ADD (Automatic differential disconnect), like the SR5's do.
This mod for SR5's stops the front diff from engaging which allows you to use Low Range in 2WD.
In an SR, the front diff is constantly engaged, but it does not recieve any power untill you put it into 4x4 (high or low)

Short of Pulling the front drive shaft out, im not sure what else you can do in a SR

The NC relay was used, so the rocker switch light is illuminated when the diff is UNLOCKED - important for me as signal to re-engage the front diff ....for when I come off the rocks and back on to the beach. Cheers

I did this mod last night. I was going to put in the relay, but then i couldnt be bothered just for a single blue light. I connected the rocker switch (same one as above) however for the front to be engaged, the switch had to be pushed in to completed the circuit. This looked a bit silly so all I did was pop the switch cover (rocker bit) off, turned the switch upside down and then reattached the cover.
Now when the switch looks disengaged, its is actually connected up. Then when you push the switch in, it disengages. I hope this makes it easier for people :)

Just been thinking about this mob I have had and use a lot but im just wondering if it is ok to use when for example on the beach in L4 and then reach a section of hard ground is it ok to flick the switch instead of shifting the lever. And then on again
Also could this apply when in H4

Can you put ADD into an SR?
It would help fuel consumption wouldn't it?
If you can do it what does it cost?

Cheers Alex

I don't see a problem with it and have been doing it for a couple of years in H4 when im on gravel and then hit the bitumen and flick the switch. Have done it at 80kph...
Also in L4 when i have needed tight turns on rocks and grippy surfaces... i reckon it's saved my CV's on a couple of occasions.. :D

You probably could but would not be worth it, trade in for an SR5.
I doubt fuel consumption would be any different.

Yeh thanks mate I didn't think it would hurt too much in the same position as you said only on occasions I need to free up the front end and the engage it again.
Cheers.
