Finally got around to doing this mod today, i changed it a little and added an off delay timer to allow the lights to stay on for a set time when i turn the car off. Really good when walking from the car to the door and no lights on. Handy little mod thanks steve.

Simply put, you need an off delay timer (I got mine off ebay as i couldnt find any 12V ones locally) and then all that is needed is to bring a constant 12V supply to the timer along with a signalling cable (i just used the parkers switched cable) wire the output to a contactor for the headlights and then the lights stay on for a set time once the vehichle is turned off.

When i get time today ill upload a drawing and a link to the timer i used, if needed

for those who don't wanna buy a special relay & have 2 regular 5 pin relays kicking around can be wired like such
I taped the 2 relays together.
green plug end to 86 on relay1
green harness end to 87 on relay1.
join both 86 terminals onto 1 wire that taps into the blue red trace ignition wire.
I joined 85 on relay 1 onto 1 of the 87 on relay2.
other 87 on relay2 jumped to85 on relay2 which then connects to black on harness side.
black on plug side goes to 30 on relay2. have tested now to tape up n put together.

I'm trying the 2 relay version of this mod, and I'm having issues with parkers.
Headlights go off, but parkers don't.

Pin 30 on relay 1 isnt mentioned, and you mention pin 86 on relay 1 twice.
I have it plugged in as per the picture, I think..

Should the relays I'm using be SPST (87,87a) or DPDT (87,87)

Is relay number 2 a 4 Pin in the photo?

Thanks.

yeah I just re read it & your right looks like a typo! sorry about that. normal single pole relays. yes 1 is a 4 pin but a normal 5 pin ie 2x87 terminals is just fine. 87 87a is a changeover relay & that's not what u want. 1 of the green wires on relay 1 should be to 30 not 86 as I said. the rest should be fine. if it still gives you problems write back tomorrow morning & I can pull the covers off mine to check it all out.
30&87 & 85&86 are the normal terminal pairings.

Got it all sorted! Found some old 40A 4 & 5 pin relays in the shed, wired it all up and it works as it should! Stoked! Thanks for the help.

Would this work for the headlight mod in the same fashion?

I would imagine so, yes. That's what it says. Have no first hand experience though.

Hey there all.
Just a thought, could you use the pulse from the central locking to trigger the relay?
So the lights turn off when you lock and turn on when you unlock.

interesting this mod is squeezed in the steering column, doesn't sound like the most spacy place.

Have people done the same mod elsewhere under the dash?

Any good placed to get to the dipped/main beam (before the HIGH beam is split of) in order to break the circuit placing a relay?
Have people found 8 pin timing relays?
