Replacing key (transponder)

Replacing key (transponder)

Postby tomed101 on Sat, 31 Dec 2011 9:47 +0000

The key that came with my 06 lux was the old style one with the soft rubber, which is starting to wear pretty badly, so I bought a replacement off ebay, which is just the shell, metal key and button replacement. I have got the key cut and the remote bit fits in, but the transponder in the original key seems to be glued in, and there is just a hole where it should be on the new one. Has anyone tried to remove the transponder, and if so, how did you go about it and did you succeed?

Grind and cut the key around the chip , it is the same size as the rectangle hole its glued in , be very carefull tho as the chip is the normal chip material which breaks very very easy . I use a dremel when i do them

You can purchase a new transponder chip on its own if you need one . I got one for mine as the original owner lost the spares ( as usuall) . I bought a blank and got a pre owned key from eBay for $50 , the inserted the chip got the key cut programmed he chip and reprogrammed the remote to my car . It all still cost $100 but that's better then $350 plus

I have a spare key never been cut. I bought it from Toyota, never used. It's full key and remote etc.
Still in packaging .
I want $100 for it. Well over $200 to replace

You can not program extra keys with a sub key ie the grey one with no buttons.

To verify if your key is a master or sub key
Make sure your key beeper switch is plugged back in ( ie beeping noise with key in ignition and door open)

If your key is a master key the security led will go straight out

If you key is a sub key the security light will say lit for 3 seconds after being put into the ignition.

If you only have a sub key and you want more programed. You need to buy the transponder key ecu with 2 extra keys to be programed in!

Hope this helps.

Lost my set of keys today while out on the bike! :(
You can get keys off eBay for like 10 bucks but I have to get a chip and programmed? What's that cost?
I got a spare and a service key luckily.
90km bike ride = no chance of finding them!
Cheers, Stuart
