Roof Rack for Stylesides. DIY.

Postby CJY91LUXXY on Sun, 20 Nov 2011 7:15 +0000

Decided after looking at how much the shops are charging for a rack that i'd make one myself. I needed it to hold my Roof top tent. I really wanted something tuff looking so it didnt look as grey nomad-ish as everything else out there so i did it all out of tube and bent it all up. Anyways i took photos of it all so i could make a Diy thingo

Okay well firstly i was using 50mm tube so i started by doing the rear and welding 2x 90 degree elbows on each end.
Image

Next i flap disced back the welds and welded on the two side rails.
Image

Because i don't have a notcher i just marked out the notchs and flap disced them back to where i wanted them.
Image

Here's a pic of the notch in the centre rail all welded up.
Image

Here's the rear mount, It's just a piece of 40x40 with two tabs. Had to use the 40x40 to space the rack off the rollbars to clear the roof.
Image

Test fitting to make sure it all fits.
Image

Welding centre bars in to carry the Roof Top Tent. Also can see the front mount here (had to be cut off and rewelded, Rookie error didnt check it was square).
Image

Bending up the divider betwwen the front storage area and the tent. This was done on a custom made bender, It's a manual tube bender with a 12v hydraulic pump setup on it.
To mark it all i just traced it onto the concrete and matched the other side.
Image

In this pic you can see the slight kink i made in the side rails.
Image

Both front tubes bend up and tacked on and test fitting the lights. Starting to look good at this stage.
Image

Image

Welding front luggage rails in, This will be to hold either a swag or 2x Space Cases.
Image

HiLift Jack mounts welded on. Just used 2x M12x1.5 thread bolts with a small spacer at the back. Used these bolts as theyre the same as the wheel nuts therefore i'll always have something to undo them with (Wheel Brace).
Image

Shovel Rack. JUst two offcuts off 50mm tube with two nuts welded on and a wingnut welded to a bolt to wind in and hold it.
Image

All sanded and wax and grease removered ready for paint.
Image

All Painted up.
Image

Image

And then All mounted up and done!

Please dont have a go at me of the quality of the work I'm a 20yo Chippie not a boily

Awesome job mate. Nothing wrong with your work, looks like a bought one.. Whens the tent going on?

Cheers,

Chris.

Edit: the hoop in front if the tent is a great idea. Protect it from low hanging branches etc.

Cheers jap. I can lift it myself but i'd say 50kg's max. Don't know for sure. Rooftop camper weighs Eff all so shouldn't be too top heavy. I haven't noticed it driving around at all.

Oh what a cracker! Iv been designing my own up this week and it's come up similar to that - my only dilemma is I need the bar that goes across the tray at the back - is that the same as the sports bar that is at the front, up against the back window? I was having thoughts of making the under side of the rack a spare tyre carrier as well, but still looking into that..

Nice work mate!
Cheers

Your spot on about the rear bar mate, just another sports bar split in half using the front piece only
