Hi there all been on this forum only a couple of days and very much appreciate all those people out there shairing there tips, my question to those in the know is the instrument lights fitted to my hilux has a dimmer switch fitted down by the drivers right leg ,and although it dims very low , is ther a way of compleatly turning them off , i thought of fitting a switch cut into one or other of the wires going to this set resistor switch but when i removed the multi plug to it (im trying to simulate fitting said switch ) the insrument lights whent to there full brightness , everyone help much appriciated regs Nick ;)

No there is no simple way to do it. Why do you want to turn them off?

i take it you got the sr5 with the dark tinted instrument panel, without this back light you will not see it to well that is why it is on all the time, sr is clear and does not turn on all the time.

Need to use the hilux of road at night on some farms in se kent ,uk. without lights on ,as pest control ,and the instument lights play havock with ones night vision . i have by the way a D4D 3ltr auto i think i will remove the dimmer switch and read the resistance on each setting then see if a switch higher resistance potentiometer exsists ,am i correct in thinking that this switch is on the earth side offering progressivley higher resistance , so dropping voltage ,12,10,8,6,4,2,volt kind reg Nick ........if the jobs a no no i"ll hve to take my mums advice and put a sock in it , think il need three !

Is there a dedicated fuse for the dash lights you could remove or wire a switch into the feed?
i know it's not a hilux but really.....WHO CARES!! We're all here for the same reason :D

Try removing the gauge fuse. You will lose the lot, gauges included but I guess it won't matter as you don't want to see them anyway

Thanks for the replies , yes fitting a switch from the feed wire to the instuments,would work just fine ,I got a bit wrapped up in the dimmer switch solution , so any help with the location and colour of the instument, feed wire would be just great .Then i think i will run the wires down to the right hand switch pannel and install the switch there thanks again.
