I also pulled the old one apart and did some testing,the 5-6 core ribbon cable wrapped inside the assembly has a break in it somewhere on one of the cores causing the problem for so many hilux's.
Probly fixable but for $100 for a new one its great peice of mind.
for anyone with a car over 200ks,out of the warranty period,its an easy job to do yourself
