Well I parted with about 4 litres of lanox this arvo and did the whole underside of car / inside chassis rails, basically anywhere I could spray I sprayed.

Smelly stuff! ... seems goopy, but i presume will dry non tacky as everyone suggests.

Time will tell.

So anyone know how to get the stuff cheaper?

$80 for 5 litres is fairly steep!

Wonder if it matters that it hasn't had a chance to dry and I've been driving on wet roads ? Wet day in Perth.

Also a ton of smoke from exhaust : hot parts drying / burning off excess lanotech ha ha

Yeah, it'll burn off the exhaust

The smell disappears after a couple of days.

It won't dry completely, but leaves a greasy film on everything. Not tacky though so it shouldn't pick up too much grit.

Shouldn't matter that you drove on wet roads. The stuff never really dries and the entire point is to repel water.

Is it too late to test some Tectyl? It is used a lot in the rustproofing industry.

I have used underbody spray/ black kill rust on the old 92 lux every six months, and a good low pressure hose off after hitting the beach and car is perfectly rust free.

Picking up my Hilux tomorrow, and this will be one of the first thing I will start working on.

Anyone had any experience with Mr Sheen? I used to have a motorbike and used the stuff for years. It was sprayed on everything, from paint to chrome, and always make everything look great as well as protected it. And the bike always smelt great too lol

Anyways, before I go ahead and use it all over the Hilux, I might test it out like here

I use two products, Penetrol to get into the all the microscopic holes and deal with any existing rust, then use a spray can of Tectyl 506 Heavy Duty Rust Preventative = no rust ever.

Picked up some Lanox to do the underside of the Hilux, is there anywhere I shouldn't be spraying this? Ok on exhaust, diff, leaf suspension etc?

I have some surface rust on the underside of my tub near the numberplate. Can Penetrol be sprayed over that to stop it or would I need to hit it with a wire brush and re-paint it first?

Actualy, after looking at the Penetrol on the 2nd page photo is it even worth doing?
Their website says it will coat the metal starving rust of air and moisture so it cannot contiinue but in your test there's plenty of rust on that piece

You can mix the penetrol with your paint if your treating bodywork rust or just apply the penetrol first then paint over it, get better results mixing it first IMO.
Treating the chassis just paint it on with a brush then spray tectyl straight over the top.
That's how I do it, works a treat.

Yeah, the Penetrol isn't all that great on its own.
I've used the spray on penetrol on some existing rust in the cross member under the radiator. It sealed the rust for a while, but after a couple of months there was fresh rust again.
I now just use lanox on the outside of the chassis.

The Penetrol that you mix with paint to help it flow into smaller spaces is probably ok, but it will be the paint that seals the metal not the Penetrol.

youve only done half the job if you only apply penetrol and nothing else, think of penetrol as a carrier, it 'carries' paint and rust preventatives into the microscopic pitting that rust causes and stops it going further by squeezing out any air and moisture as well as carrying the rust treatment in with it.
If you sprayed tectly or a rust preventative paint on by itself, it wouldnt penetrate anywhere near as good as when using penetrol with it.
It really is great stuff when used correctly.

The stuff I used is in a pressure pack can, so can't be mixed with paint. It is designed to be sprayed on by itself as a sealer and then painted over (which I did) and the results were very underwhelming.

Yeah ya gotta use the paint on penetrol, the spray pack is good for small stuff can still mix paint with it just paint/spray straight over it whilst still wet, but yeah you'll see much better results with the paint on version.

Just to dig up an old thread. I'm off to Fraser in a week and thought I'd best get onto this now. I've used lanolin on on the lux before but mainly for a day of beach driving here and there and the occasional overnight camping at Teewah. I was curious just where to spray the Lanox, as I'd usually do chassis, tow bar, diff, leaves, and front suspension and other supports sround the vehicle. Does anyone do in the engine bay? Any advice would be appreciated.
