luxxy you may get a code some time soon, but if you do you need the 7mm hole ;)

Cheers, I'll keep an eye out for it. It's been a few days already and still nothing. From the reading I've done on other sites and also companies that supply the blanking plate it's a chance of getting the fault code. Some models do and some don't.

true luxxy, what year model? the forum would be interested at what year the full blank works and yes some do and some don't ;) The code only happens under specific conditions, you might not have reached those conditions yet ;)

Yeah the early ones could get away with blocking it completely I'm pretty sure. Good luck with the clean it's a "C word" of a job!

Mine has a build date of June 2005, 3.0lt SR5.

I gave it a pretty hard run, it's an auto so left it in 3rd gear and had the revs up to 3k at 100km and then more on flats, and going up some steep hills and it held it fine. Still no fault codes to date. Probably done about 200kms since putting in the plate.

Cheers for the good luck, I might try and tackle this next week some time, with 150k on the clock, it can't be pretty inside from some of the pics I have seen with less kms on their rigs.

Luxxy you may have the pre water cooled engine - in that case it wont likely throw a code..... :D

I've added in a 7mm plate and the fuel economy has got worse, far worse. Pre restriction it would do about 10-11l/100 cruising at 100kmh as per my odb port+app. Now it will barely go below 15l on the same road, same speed.

I thought there may be a leak or poorly tightened but it seemed ok. So I got a different plate, fitted it and got the same poor result.

I had a thought that maybe the ecu would need to learn but the first tank of juice went quickly, easily lost 100km of my normal range.

Has anybody else seen this kind of result?

Somthing is wrong and id say it's not the plate. My economy got better with the plate but thats not why it was fitted. Sesrch cleaning map and maf and then do a few more kms.

Definitely something not right.

There are squillions of little things to be undone and done up when the plate is installed. Very easy to get something wrong or overlook something, and with all the electronic engine management stuff, little things have unexpected effects elsewhere.

Thanks for the replies guys.
I only undid (loosened) the two nuts that join the EGR flange to the block (or the head? not sure). I also just undid the two bolts that hold the EGR system. That allowed me to lever the EGR slightly out so I could slip the restrictor plate in, then I did all the fasteners mentioned above back up.
(note the second plate I used has cutouts to allow you slipping it in without having to put the plate over the holes - similar to this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/EGR-Blanking ... 1863493345)

Between the two goes that Ive had at this I returned it to stock and got the normal fuel usage patterns for about 800km (10-11l/100k highway), so I don't think anything is broken or loose.

EGR tract is uncleaned, I'm psycing myself up to get into that next. Ute has done 110,000km so itd be pretty gummed up id say.

Forgot to mention the the MAF and MAP have been cleaned recently prior to fitting the plate.
MAP was a little gummed, not as bad as some of the other guys have posted here it seemed though.
Will get another can of MAF cleaner as I "lent" it to a mate and now my boomerang wont come back.

Hey fish351,

Mate I noticed mine went from about 9.5l to about 10.2l / 100kms
I watch mine like a hawk and use an app to track my usage every time I fill up.
Not sure if it's cause I've been a little heavy footed lately with testing the full blanking plate or if it's more to do with an article I read about when blanking off the egr the fumes that don't get burnt on the first go and get recycled through the egr basically get burnt again which they stated uses less fuel because there already is a combustion material present, blocking off the egr will result in a clean combustion and nothing else, hence why fuel usage might go up??

I'll have to find the page again and post it here as reading material while on the shitter

Just a thought anyway

Thanks Luxxy,

That would appear to be what is happening here, as I can remove the plate and revert to the normal fuel usage (so I don't think I've damaged anything or left anything undone).
I'd say my usage is much higher than yours. I'm going to put a full tank through with the 7mm plate in to see just where it is. Mine usually is around the 11l/100k for my normal weekly driving conditions.

Not sure if its placebo or not but the ute seems to pull better from low RPM with the plate in. For example when I pull out from my road onto the highway in second, it normally would shudder a little then begin pulling. With the plate in it seems to pull cleaner and better at the same speed. Its not like i'm flattening it, its more just coast up to intersection in second, then if all clear gradually roll on throttle as i get on the main road.

Seat of the pants dyno is never accurate however

Maybe hearing more turbo whistle as well. Could be placebo again.

Just been reading about resetting the ECU, I might give that a go too.

fish, you may have a 'placebo' on the whistle and better low down power but you could also have a real improve a little because low-down is exactly where the egr opens until you go higher in the revs or open the throttle more (i.e. when the egr valve closes). :) With the plate in you are getting more fresh air into the engine and less burnt exhaust in the intake so there will be a lift in power, slight but probable. This also explains the 'whistle' when the turbo spins with higher velocity exhaust. If you really want a 'whistle' you need to open up the exhaust from the dump back.
Also you probably are getting slightly worse fuel consumption because you are 'putting some wellie in' to test the changes. Either way you have improved your lux... now for the 3" exhaust ;)
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Thanks for the reply Gipsy.

I think the fuel consumption is worse as my app (ODB Car Doctor pro) gives a realtime graph of fuel economy.
As my drive is mostly highway during the week (and thus part throttle like you say) I can see that the usage at 100 km/h is around 14-15l/100km. That and the fuel guage has moved off full about 80kms earlier than it usually does.

I used to have fast cars (modded XR6 Turbos and Typhoons) as a young bloke but with middle age rapidly approaching i'm quickly turning to a grandpa on the road.

Anyway I'll keep looking at it and post back anything that might be interesting.

As for mods to the ute, I have a shopping list as long as your arm and a wallet as empty as a church on Grand Final day.

Fish, try doing the old fashioned full to full check for consumption. What you have described is rather imprecise.

My consumption basically didn't change, and may have improved a whisker.

Gipsy's ideas on low throttle opening are correct in my case as my 2014 has a slight but definite improvement noticeable under 1500rpm in the higher gears. Engine is definitely smoother and pulls more cleanly at those revs in3rd and 4th (and 5th if I'm gentle enough)

That's pretty high fishy, I did a 450km trip today and averaged 9.1 in 100/110 zones on the highway. Seems unusual yours would go so high....

Hey y'all had a bit of an idea today in terms of tricking the ecu into thinking the egr is open and working when it is not. Long story short I've been having a few problems relating to my egr ( I think) and I was pulling it apart and was thinking what would happen if you use a seperate egr position sensor held in the egr open position or partially open position remove a vac line from the egr valve to remain closed would the ecu then think the valve is functioning properly. Not sure if it has been covered as I haven't read all 58 pages on this thread it was just a thought and wondering if anyone has tried this before???
Cheers matt
