What have you guys found is the best for descents in an auto (I have auto v6) ,On a rocky or loose rock hill ,kind of stuff where a wheel will come off the ground.
A mate said use 4L and put it in 1st or 2nd .. But he never had an auto 4wd
Is this too much preasure on the running gear ?
My decent was very controlled in the end

For beach at Stockton I'm normally in 4h in with 3rd or 4th selected in the auto

I use low range and 1 gear for descents like you mention above mate as the auto can tend to take off a bit I still find myself using the breaks a bit.
On the beach I go high 4 3rd gear

on a descent in an auto particularly rock steps you can also pull on the hand brake a few clicks, will stop her getting away on you. 4L 1st wont hurt the gearing in a descent

Yer I love my auto off road in the rocky stuff, find it alot easier to keep the car under control and not have it roll around and such,

4low always for rocky stuff,
Taken it to the dunes once, won't do that again anytime soon couldn't stop it over heating.
Truckless no more

I agree kyle. My auto is awesome in everything except long slow descents where it suffers greatly when on brakes. They become overheated and pedal starts getting harder from expanding drums & discs. I've found auto to be quite relaxing and controlled when off road.

Maybe I need a sprinkler system on my discs & drums

Haha I wonder if that would work.

thats a pretty good idea and should be easy to implement too

I have seen something similar but it was designed more as a fire suppression system

Yeh I'm thinking more about it as well. We use a mist system in vessel engine rooms. Also hose pressure pump should do it. Anyway sorry guys off topic.

In relation to autos. Being my first ever auto 4x4. When in 4 low on a steep descent is there any other way of dropping speed without using brakes. It too fast letting it coast. That's the only thing I miss not having a manual.

Fitting a switch for the torque converter to lock it up or getting a set of reduction gears are two ways. We did the Vic High Country in Nov from Mansfield to Talbotville, 410 klm in 5 days. When brakes got a bit hot rested them for a short time & just went steady. Mechanical sympathy is your first port of call to get there in one piece.

I here you and try but when your in a convoy in these particular cases its a little more difficult.

Being reasonably mechanical once you have experienced these events you know what to expect next time round.

I was even considering re routing the wiper washer bottle at one stage. Ha what a mod that would be.

I like the torque convertor idea. Might have to look into that.
