Front end wind noise

Front end wind noise

Postby Nad01989 on Mon, 06 Aug 2018 7:35 +0000

I recently had a TJM bullbar fitted and now around the 90km-100km/h+ I get a whistling noise from my front end somewhere. I thought it was coming from the driver side only but the mrs said she hears its coming from the passenger side when shes sitting there. I read in an old n70 post something about wishbone guards causing problems on that gen hilux.

I'm not what you would call mechanically minded, but is it possible this is the problem im having on the n80? do the new hiluxes even have these guards? if so can anyone show me a pic of what they look like so i can take them off to see if it helps.

Thanks

Strap the missus under the hilux and hit the highway. Only way to find out for sure ...

Have you asked whoever installed it to track it down ? Will be a major pain given only at 90kmh+.

I'd be talking to TJM first but if you want to have a play, have all the trim pieces splash gaurds under the ute been clipped back properly?

You could also try putting some tape over any joins openings to see if makes any difference.

Ill try the strapping the missus method for sure

Had a quick chat with the guy from tjm, he flat out said they havnt had any complaints of noise from the n80 bars. I asked him to book me a time slot to check it out and he did which was nice but he didnt sound too pleased about it. Gonna go at it with some duct tape the sarvo and block up holes and see how i go. Being in mount isa iv got no shortage of quiet 100km/h zones to test on :)

Hope it's not but... Maybe get Toyota to check your turbo isn't damaged if you have no luck with the bullbar.

I had this issue after having my ARB bar fitted to my 2014 Hilux. I noticed it on the drive home and went straight back. When I asked if they knew what caused it i was met with a lot of blank looks but insisted on talking to the installer, who knew straight away what it was. It was the the wind whistling through the holes in the control arm bushing (I think that's what it's called)

Wrapped the holes with 100mph tape and its been good ever since.

I hope your fix id as easy as that.

Cheers,

Jim

Good to hear you found a solution :)

Spent the last 2 hours of daylight after work out on the road testing and taping holes. couldn't find any that made a difference :(

Any chance you have pictures of where you taped?

Interesting find while i was testing everything out was driving in one direction it didnt make any noise but driving in the opposite to that it would squeel like all hell.

Question:
Did you install anything else at same time as the bar.
Had a customer swear black and blue couple years back after we fit a bar to his 200series it whistled like a banshee At 80-90kmh. (ARB bar) got him back in and found that he had a whole pile of extra lights and light bars added after we had a go.
Turns out After a lot of masking tape and road testing (not easy to find a 90 zone and hit that in Sydney either.)
It was the Light Bar Mounted to the top rail of his bull bar we moved it a couple of mm higher (rotated the clamps and readjusted the light) bang No noise. As simple as that. Wind was whistling through the gap between the heat sink fins and the bar tube.

Worth a look if you got a light bar.

Yep - gen 8 have same cv boot guards mounted on lower arm.
They only make a noise when standard bumber is removed exposing it to wind.
Will try to post a pic if you cant see the guards altough easy to find. Just look infront of cv.
easy to unbolt

No other accessories outside of the bullbar, scrub rails, side steps and winch. I definitely dont want to be that goose that goes in all frustrated about something and it turns out it isnt tjm's problem

I was eyeing off those things your talking about deadlybeast, Ill give unbolting them a go today and see how I go.

*edit* Tried unbolting, they're well and truly on there. Couldnt make them budge with the tools iv got on hand :(

I had the same issue but without a bullbar, it's probably the side mirrors, dealer will fix it.
