G'day all,

Lately I've seen a bunch of the HiLux N80s going around with bonnet scoops. Considering the N80 is front mount intercooled rather than the N70 HiLux which was top mount intercooled, does this actually do anything for the engine or are they doing this purely for looks?

I have been looking at this myself, for our 2016 Lux, I’ve been told, by my mechanic that the engine temp gets very high and over time will affect engine components, so if I do a ECU remap we should also consider increasing airflow etc.

Creating more airflow and heat dissipation will help reduce temp and increase longevity of the engine. Whilst some people are after looks?? I’m keen to see what everyone is doing for performance etc.

I’ve just come across the below bonnet scoop on ebay, this guy makes them in Adelaide.

Thoughts anyone?????

Wouldn't a simple bonnet vent near the rear of the bonnet on both sides work better for heat removal.
Haven't looked at them lately, but years ago you could get a generic vent that was flat with louvers to allow heat out.

They probably would work, I’m also looking at increasing airflow in as well, my mechanic is suggesting modifications to the front end, maybe the grill and plastic parts that inhibit flow to reduce engine temp.
I was thinking that a bonnet scoop with dissipation vents would also help.
Plus they do look tough!!! ;)

What I'd like to know is why are yas having trouble with engine temps??

No issues with engine temps or over heating, it’s more about the long term longevity of the engine due to the higher heat these new engines run at.

This info has come from my mechanic here in Darwin stating that theyr’e not certain how the engines will go long term......

If it’s one thing Toyota are good at, it’s making an engine last. I wouldn’t worry about modifying your new vehicle, Toyota have the best QA in the business and might know a little bit more about building vehicles than a local mechanic. This engine is more than capable of high kilometres in standard form.

NZMarkb nah man my ute hits the tracks hard almost every weekend. Got a lift sitting at home waiting to go but I'm just waiting on my new tyres to arrive so I can get both smashed out in one hit
