Canopy choices...

Hi guys,

The time has come to get a canopy on the new rig.

The question is, which one? :? To the people that have one on their ute, can you share the pros/cons on each one etc. Any pictures would also be appreciated!

I like the look of the Toyota canopy but are there better ones out there?

I'm really happy with the Alpha GSX canopy from Caddy Storage.
I felt that the side lift up window opening was too small on the Arb and Toyota canopies
Central locking works well. Comes with roof rails. Finish is nice. I paid $3400 fitted.

I have an ARB one with the lift up windows all round. Can't fault it to be honest, decent build quality, looks alright. Haven't had it leak although i have only taken it off once since i installed it. They are pretty expensive for what they are though. If i went through the same process again, i would've bought a cab chassis and gotten a tray with a jack-off canopy (or something similar with an anderson plug to disconnect the rear power supply) so i can still use it as a ute without having to take all of my stuff out, then take the fibreglass canopy off the tub and all the mucking around that goes with it.
Just my 2 cents

Here's my genuine EGR canopy. Has central locking, LED interior light and the front glass between canopy and cabin folds down to make it easy to clean the glass on the cabin. Can't fault it, it's extremely well made but expensive as hell. Tradesman make a compatible ladder rack for it which is handy.

Here's a thread I started a while back but it's still in the wrong section and may be why you didn't find it.

Stay as far away from razorback as you can i had one installed on my TRD and over a few years all the struts failed the glass on the sliding window cracked because razorback themselves installed a screw that crack the glass on closing it.
The back never closed properly
The roof rails that were again installed by razorback left crack marks in the paint

Fortunately I had hail damage and got the insurance to buy a new one and the service I received from the wa**er owner of razorback was very questionable

Does anyone have an SR with the genuine canopy on the back?
My local dealer seems to be reasonably "with" the prices and the EGR/genuine ones do look the money. However I know there is a difference between SR and SR5 - so would any one have any pictures?

I agree. I fitted one of theirs to my 2011 SR5. I didn't go for the GSX but got the CME as the side doors (or windows if you choose the CMEW) are streets ahead of any others. They may not have these for the new shape though yet.

I ended up getting the toyota canopy. It's goes in this week as the rear window does does not shut properly. Ie it closes but not against the entire rubber seal. Not sure how they are going to fix it. It's like the whole canopy needs to be moved back so the window can shut fully against the tailgate.

Anybody else have a similar issue?

The ARB canopy for current Hilux is miles ahead of previous ARB canopies. The only one that I have checked out was pretty impressive.

Breidy94 - have you thought about what style of canopy you want?

ie;
fibreglass
steel, flip up sides
canvas?

I have the ABR classic canopy and i love it. flip window on the passenger side and slide with dog mesh (for my pooches) on the other with a little roof vent. maybe i would go the new summit canopy if had the choice again but i can live with this one for now. On appearances the ARB ones look a little more square and not soo streamlined like the genuine toyota and EGR canopy as shown above.
Will porst a pic once i work out how to post them here in the forum lol

Mike.

Toyota also do pop up roof vents for their canopy and a cargo barrier for anyone interested.

Ended up parting with the hard earned coins and going the genuine canopy.
Fitting in the first week of December - hopefully its worth the money.
Will post opinion and photos when fitted.

When you live in a very warm place like North Queensland, a demister is the least of your worries!
