Fridge in tray security

Fridge in tray security

Postby Red80 on Sun, 03 Jul 2016 6:48 +0000

Just picked up my new Hilux SR5 and looking to set it up for camping/touring.
I've just come out of a Ranger with canopy, dual battery and fridge slide in the back. I am trying to get away from using the canopy this time as it's an expensive add on and you don't get the return on resale. Plus it limits the loading of bigger items

Has anyone secured their fridge in the tray with a lockable box? I'm thinking of a removable lockable box similar to the below but mounting it to a slide. An alternative is a box over the top of a fridge slide but I don't want the box in there all the time so it would have to be quickly removable.im thinking of internal latches that secure it to the fridge slide.

Any ideas or experience? Also I was going to go for the Toyota under rail tubliner any horror stories about water getting under it?

I just got a new sr5. Planning on getting a canopy in a year or so once the new bub is ready to go camping it will be running with the soft tonneau for now. I'm just going to fix the fridge to the tray or false ply floor with a couple of turnbuckles for the time being. Would love to avoid a canopy on this rig but just don't know if it's viable for a family.

Those fridge boxes you linked to are huge and obviously would restrict your ability to cover the rest of your load. With a tray but no canopy do you really need a fridge slide ? Can just access it from the side really.

Have seen those boxes in the flesh and they r pretty good. Dunno what they'd be worth but they look pricey!

Are you worried about loosing the contents of the fridge or just the fridge?

I have a steel tray and chain and Tie mine to the tray(eye bolt) or anywhere I can,you could just use one of the factory tie down points.. sure its not theft proof but make its a pain in the arse to get in a hurry so would expect the thieves to move on to the next target..

Really want to protect the fridge and contents. I sort of need the slide because my wife is a little on the short side and I don't want the kids dragging stuff over the side of the tray in and out of the fridge, 60 lt waeco is pretty deep.

Going to call the mob today and see what the price of them is, would still be cheaper than a canopy

Having a canopy is an expensive white elephant from my experience, they are not secure and leak and in really heavy 4x4ing the bolts shear off :o

The DSM tool box looks like an interesting alternative to securing a fridge !!!

I'm currently doing what SRD4D is doing and once I get my new Tub Transformer I will be able to store the fridge near the front of the tub & swing away the roof top tent to get into the fridge.

If they want it theirs nothing you can to stop it, I have mine in the tray, chained with padlock, all they need is Alenkeys to undo the handle if they want it so it only keeps the honest person out,
I've looked into so alloy boxes to fit it in, just can't justify the money, when my fridge is only a small 40liter and the box would be worth 4x the fridge cost
farting is alot like jxxxxxg off. both provide instant gratification, but neither is a long term solution to the actual problem......................

Turns out they (dsm) don't make one big enough for a 60lt waeco.
I figure something is better than nothing so I will look into making a box to enclose the entire fridge and slide that can be removed easily.

Canopy is too much coin for what I need it to do and I already have a few space cases to put crap in.
When I get time to make it up I'll post up some pics

This is a link to a post I put up a while ago.
It's not an enclosed box but it might give you some ideas.
Cheers

Those DSM boxes are barely bigger than the fridge, we use them all the time and are great, not cheap, but offer good protection for our Engels and have a great lock down.

I really like the idea of their attachment system but need a slide. If they had one that fitted a waeco I would mount the entire box to a slide

for us, a slide is another thing to break, we prefer friction toolboxes to boxes on rollers and bearings, never last, keep it simple.

Just a toolbox that doesn't have rollers or bearings to open drawers, normally it's just powder coat on powder coat. The best ones in the business are without a doubt faber, but they are worth a fortune. I've got a roller & bearing box on my ute currently & 3 years of use has managed to flog it out pretty badly. I rebushed it & it's good as new, but friction slide will always be better than bearings and shit if your actually going off-road a lot of a farm ute in my opinion, leave rollers for the workshop.

Done
4 clamps to undo and the entire box comes off with just the slide left in the tray. The D shackles are temporary until I get some better pins for securing the clamps. Will also make a low profile cover for the slide so it doesnt damage anything going in the tray

I just bent a flat bar that goes around the fridge and cut two slots into the fridge slide so the flat bar pokes through and just stick a padlock on it.
