Hard Tonneau

Hard Tonneau

Postby Rickoo5 on Sat, 21 May 2016 5:11 +0000

Has anyone has issues with a genuine hard tonneau on a 2016 SR5 dual cab? Mine has been back a few times as it would not open. I am also looking the best way to stop some of the dust from getting into the tub. I was going to put a fridge in the tub but I think the dust would kill it.

Yes mine went back 1 day after delivery, they adjusted it and it lasted less than 2 weeks and it wouldn't open again. I got a bit cross the 2nd time, i am concerned that if i am away somewhere and cant get in the back im gunna have a big problem. Anyway since then it has been all good, so hopefully it is now fixed. I must say it is a brilliant idea, just a pity it isnt more reliable, the one on my 2012 had a key lock on either side and was a bit of a hassle to lock so was generally never locked or even latched

Glad i am not the only one to have this issue.Last time it was in to Toyota for this issue they lubed the locking mechanism and i am now worried the dust will stick to the lube and gum it up.

Hi, we have a brand new auto Hilux sr5 2016 - picked it up in March and it only has 5,000km on the clock. This car is doing our head in. It has been back to the dealers 5 times now. Problem we experience is a jolting motion at 40km when braking, without fail. Sometimes it does it when excelerating at 80km - at first they greased the tail shaft. That didn't work. At 1,000km service the dealer replaced the tail shaft and no difference. Since then the car has been driven by dealer's mechanics and tested - they found irregularities in the way it drives but as yet can't fix the problem. It's like the computer has no idea when to change gears, does stupid things, over revving then dropping. And the fuel consumption is horrible. Driving the lemon in Eco and it does 250km on half a tank. We have had it! Today we spoke to Consumer Affairs. We want the car fixed or replaced. This is ridiculous. Brand new car driving like a dog.

That is not good at all. I think you should start a new thread for this issue.

Yep, mine's been back for the Hard Tonneau fix as well.

Please be advised this is an Australian Dealer add-on and not actual "Toyota Genuine".

The problem is the control cables run back all the way to the cab and over time they stretch themselves enough slack so that it doesn't quite work when the central locking system wants it to.

Mine used to require a karate-kick at a particular spot to complete, after you unlocked via the central-locking. Which was quite funny - when the wife does it. Watch out for those Asians....

Good advertisement for Toyota in any case.

It does comes with a set of keys, which you can used to manually lock and unlock it.

I'm having the same problem, cant open the hard tonneau and only had the car for less than 12hrs. any tips to get it working before I take it back? would be a real pain if I had something in there that I needed.

Also their is a key lock on there but the key for the car wont open it. should I have got another key?

Better take it back, as you would void the warranty if you try fixing it yourself - it's a fairly flimsy mechanism so can easily break in untrained hands. The Hard Tonneau hooks onto a couple of lugs on the side of the tray. The mechanical wires to the locks can stretch - as undersized wires would, and so they only 1/2 released the hooks. It's all very flimsy.

And the wife discovered if you land a "turning kick" on the hard cover at the lug position it was enough to jar the mechanism to release the hook fully.

Yep a Royal pain in the ass (& a carton) when the meat for you crew's friday BBQ is in there & you're all hungry.

Then I remembered the keys, its a different keys specifically for the Hard Tonneau.

Yeh I took it back to Toyota today and they fixed it. I didn't' receive any additional keys. If you have a key can you manually unlock it open it even when it was playing up?

Yes, I used the keys till Toyota could get me an appointment to go in. I'm sure yours would have come with keys, does your lock mechanism have a keyhole for keys to unlock.

For a couple of days before i remembered the keys, i got the wife to kick it opened and I moved all my tools into the back and front passenger seat.

As I remembered how it works, the Hilux central locking system pulls a cable (which is a non-Toyota Genuine dealer addition and is undersized, badly design and stretches in operation causing all these heartache and problems) connected to a central locking mechanism to lock / unlock the Tonneau.

This centralised mechanism can be operated independently from the central locking system with own key that you insert into the handle at the back of the Tonneau.

Yeh I have a key hole but didn't receive any keys. Ill have to track it down for the dealership.

Have you every tried to take the hard top off?? Just wanted know I if it was difficult, I would image you just have to pop out the gas struts and unbolt the hinges?

Also if I have a larger item I need to get in the back, could you drive with the hard top in the open position or will it put to much press on the hinges?

Cheers.

To take the cover off - undo the gas struts and pull the two silver/gold handles up forward, it's easy.

As far as the locking mechanism goes, I just persevered and it appears to have come good.

Only hassle I have is the accessory write up for the cover clearly states "colour matched" not "colour coded" and as I have the Pearl the cover rarely looks the same colour as the vehicle. A warranty claim over the issue sees me getting the exact same run around as you do with Jetstar when you have a damaged bag claim, they stuff you around hoping you'll go away which of course you will after 20 calls.

FYI, even though the cover is made by a company in Australia outside of Brisbane it IS a Toyota Genuine Accessory.

re: Driving with the hard top open - not sure, but i think mine would be too flimsy for it.

& I agree with Richard - colour matched means what it says - colour to match the rest of the car. So I don't expect to see 2 different shades of white when I look at it.

But I think we both have a different idea of what Toyota Genuine stands for.

eg. I can buy a Beats for Dr. Dre headphone set from the Apple shop but that's not an Apple Genuine accessory. Same goes for this cover- it's made by someone in Brisbane as an add on, & the dealers sales guys calls it Toyota Genuine in order to justify their mark up. But it doesn't come with Toyota user instructions, is badly engineered and and is quite hit and miss in performance.

Furthermore, the front part of my cover is sealed in with silicone... I don't think I can ever take mine off.

I'll take a picture tomorrow, of all the silicone running down the front of the tray between the cab .... so you can all have a good laugh at my car. it was probably all clear when they finished the job, but a couple of months where the silicones was now all brown with dust. you can see it but you can't get in to clean it off.

The bloody itch is further than the reach!

Slightly off the topic, does anyone know if a tub liner is available for the 2016 model?

Apple don't advertise, and never will, Beats head phones as their own product, go to Toyota's web site and have a look at their range of accessories for the new Hilux and you'll find the hard tonneau cover.
