I had problems with the central locking hard lid as well... Dealer had to replace the 'underside lock mechanism', which took 6wks to order in... I just used the key to override it in the meantime.

It's been working fine since, however I keep a 'lid key' inside the car just incase....

That would be annoying. What's wrong with it? All over the same issue?

Yes same issue, either the locking mechanism doesnt unlock properly or the latch handle wont unlatch the catches. Either way you cannot get the lid open, as i keep asking what happens if i go away somewhere and it wont open. Imagine being on Fraser about to set up camp and you cant get into the tub. 2 fixes ago they said they modified it and it lasted 1 week. I took it back again and they adjusted something else and so far so good

Which is why I keep complaining here they're lying thru their teeth.
The Au branch of Toyota has sourced this hard tonneau from a miscellaneous fibraglass maker and stamped it Toyota Genuine.

This part has nothing to do with the rest of the car which is engineered properly by Toyota.
It's like Apple (only in Australia) taking a Beats by Dr Dre headphone and putting a Apple sticker on it and saying that's Apple Genuine accessory - to increase sales in Au.

There's also none of the strict Toyota quality control on this accessory. Each one is quality controlled by the buyer - you are the quality control department for this accessory. When "you" the buyer find a problem, bring it back we'll look at it.

After a few calls to Toyota Customer Care they've agreed to respray my cover to try and get the Crystal colour to more of what it should be so they're treating it as one of their own products which in fact it is no matter how long and hard you want to argue the point (your reasoning extends to the original tyres also and that extends to ALL other parts on the vehicle not made by Toyota?)

By there mere fact they advertise it as a genuine accessory they're legally bound to it. I can't see them hand balling you off to the mob that make them in Brisbane.

The also offered me a full refund, maybe you can do the same but you'd better make your point pretty strong.

Richard, the fact that you had to quality control a Toyota Genuine Part for Toyota Australia is the problem.

The fact you had to call them is an inconvenience which is what a QA department is for.

Glad you got it fixed.

Hi all,
I've had my SR5 for less than a month and the hard tonneu latch handle is either broken or needs adjustin as the latch goes up but the mechanism doesnt pull the cables to unlock the catchers.
Has anybody had a similar issue with the black opening handle assy?
I do agree, a great item but pretty poxy and flimsy in the actual design of the locking/unlocking function of the lid assy

Hey Franks, take it back to Toyota. read above page 1, the new cables will initially stretch and hence the lock becomes sticky.

You can still open the boot with the keys (supplied separately when you buy the hard top).

You'd find that most of the Toyota 'genuine accessories' are manufactured by contracted facilitates and badged Toyota so I don't see what the difference is with the hard top ???

Irrespective, the issues with the hardtop that you are finding are a pretty common problem irrespective of manufacturer. It is Toyota's issue to resolve, much like the tailshaft issue, but still frustrating from a consumer perspective. I understand how people are emotional about the problems that their cars.

In the scheme of things the issues with the N80 seem to be relatively minor and generally resolvable. It's not like there are flat bed rides happening all over the country.

I've had issues with my hard top on my 2016 SR5. I brought it up with the dealer at my 1000km service. They're aware of the problem and was told it's a faulty actuator. They will completely replace under warranty on my 10,000 service which I'm not far off.
You can drive with it open if you really need to. I wouldn't go over 80kmh though. but the annoying thing is the open door alarm goes off.
And yes they are really easy to remove. Don't forget to unplug the electrics. Easier with two people.

I have a tub liner too which suit the hardtop. It'll be the same one for canopies. The liner stops short of the top lip.

Yes - Just received our brand new 2016 SR5 (bought 15.12.16) and experienced the same problem after delivery (51km). Returned the next day and it was fixed. Now 1 week later the same problem. I've also tried with my key and still does not open.

I've booked it to fix this again on Friday (only 181km) and will see if this is an on-going problem. If anyone knows a quick way to open let me know.

It's a real problem when you have goods to deliver and you can't open the lid on a busy day.
