Long Range Tank/Trip Computer Issues

Hi All,

Has anyone fitted a long range tank to their n80 yet?

I had fitted the ARB Frontier 150Lt tank into my SR5 and am now having a few issues with the km range reading. Can this be corrected to the new max fuel capacity?
Also i am realising how handy it used to be having trip computers/odometers. :(

Cheers
Mike.

i think your only option is to run something like a scangage so you can actually monitor how much fuel is left in your tank.
i'd hate to think how much fuel is left in your tank when the fuel light comes on. i think there is about 20L in stock form.

my dealer told me last week that the trip computer, aka range left will not work with a long range tank.

Asked ARB ? Do they install a separate fuel gauge with the replacement tank ?

Going to head back today and have a chat about options/solutions.

A reset on the factory base reading on the computer would be great

The consensus was that the range reading might start once the amount of fuel left got below the factory full setting but seems like that isn't the case and it counts down the moment it starts ticking over the meters and calculating it against the economy figure.

The guys at you arb should have told you that the factory trip computer range will be rendered useless. Your main guage just stays on full for longer.

Really ? That's pretty average that they don't even use a re-calibrated sender unit to make the original gauge function properly. Do they install a secondary gauge somewhere or do you just have no information on the fuel level between 80 and 145 litres ?

The oem sender bolts directly into the new tank. As I said, it just stays on full for longer. Should have been explained when purchasing a tank, and there should have been a small sticker placer up in the corner of your windscreen to tell you about it!! Only time I've ever fitted a second guage from arb was for sub tanks, never on replacement tanks. It's been this way for many years!!

I fitted a longrange automotive long range tank and part of the kit has a 70mm piece of steel that you tack into your existing fuel sender float.

Works perfectly in my ute, I don't have a trip meter or any of that fancy stuff but every quarter on the fuel gauge is 30L and the light comes on with 30L left.

Not sure if it will work in the arb tank but if it works at least your gauge will be better than it is now

I have the same set up (Frontier tank) so from chockers full (diesel level at the lip of the filler pipe) it'll read whatever range it was with the standard tank (sorry the figures escape me at the moment) and start to drop down. Once the gauge needle moves it'll shoot back up to the same figure as, as I said, that the standard tank read.

So for example, when full it'll read say 888k then start to move down until the needle starts to move. It then shoots back up to 888k.

Hope that makes sense.

I can see it being a problem if you have no confidence in the new fuel range estimation and how it works.

Typical Arb salesman. Just want to get the sale without know what they are selling

That's pretty poor from ARB. Charge a fortune for their product and leave the sender unmodified.

Imagine if the new model didn't have an expected fuel range read out, this thread wouldn't exist.

I have a dealer fitted 140L LRA tank in my 2010 and they didn't modify the float. How long ago did you do this? I wonder if its a new thing or they just couldnt be bothered

Was about 12 months ago, it's even in the instructions that you get with the tank So unless they only just started doing it it should have been done. The sender has to be put in the new one anyway so it's a 2 sec job before it goes into the new tank

^^^ Yep, the guys fitted to mine when the tank was done, inside the fuel flap.

So i have done 2x full tanks since its been installed and i can say they were correct in the info they gave me.

The range to empty number varies up and down until it hits the original tank measurement (70Lts) or whatever is it. Then resets to the normal range to empty measurement (~765kms depending on you avg Lt/100km) and counts down from there to empty.

Now that i am comfortable with this, i can start using the trip a and trip b measurements for safety or long drives :) :)

still contemplating a scangauge tho. Scangague2 or E im not certain yet.

Scangauge2 works great for my tank 154L
I get 650kms till it get to the full marker
another 320kms till half
another 330kms till empty light
then another 200kms till bone dry

I use the scanguage from full then fill up again at a quarter its normally spot on with in a L

my toyota distance till empty on starts working from the full mark and bottoms out at 0 once the light comes on.

I would Highly recommend Scangauge2.
